New Providence, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. The area around the town includes much of Hackensack River Valley and portions of Middlesex and Sussex counties. The first European settlement in this area was made by the Dutch in 1624 during their exploration of what is now New Jersey. In 1764, the township was formed from parts of Rahway Township. The first coffeehouse in what is now New Providence opened on March 4, 1795 (or possibly earlier), and was operated by Nicholas Offenbach and his brother-in-law Isaac Watts. In 1814, Elijah Morse built a mill on the Hackensack River near present day North Brunswick Avenue and Garden Street; this became known as Morse's Mill after him. By 1830, mills had been erected all over Monmouth County; but it was not until 1834 that George Tucker establishedavery at what is now known as Tucker's Store on Main Street in New Providence. This store began operating as a grocery house before becoming one of the first cafes in America with its own steam engine to power it in 1840. In 1848–49 an assessment survey for township purposes was prepared by Jno Anderton; it included plans for Town House #2 which still stands today within the limits of present day New Providence. This plan proposed building two stories high with Gabled rooflines typical of Dutchtowns back then – one story below ground level and one story above ground level with mansard roofs typical of southern Netherlands where coffee beans were grown for export instead of consumed locally like here back then! New Providence is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 as "Westervelt", after their settlement on the present-day site of what is now New Providence. In 1784, it became part of Trenton Township. In 1834, it became a portion of Rahway Township and in 1856 it became a part of Vineland Borough. On May 12, 1960, it merged with Rahway Township to form Rahway Township–New Providence. The ZIP code for the town is 07014. The first permanent European settlers arrived at Netherland's West Jersey Colony on November 2, 1664: Pieter Stuyvesant and his men from Staten Island (then part of New York). They built Fort Nassau on an island near what is now South Orange Street in what are today East Brunswick and Edison townships; they named their new colony "Westervelt" after their landing site. The original fort was destroyed by Native Americans in 1668 but its replacement—the Woolwich Plantation—was completed within two years and served as the first British post on North America's eastern seaboard; Admiral John Smith visited Westervelt on December 3, 1668 while supplies were being unloaded from HMS Grafton off Long Island Sound for use at Jamestown! In 1784, when Trenton Township formed from parts of Monmouth and Ocean Counties following the cession of those counties by Great Britain during the American Revolution,[1] Westervelt voted to become a township under Trenton's jurisdiction.[2][3] It would remain so until 1861 when it reverted back to its prior status as an unincorporated community within Middlesex County.[4] In 1834, when Rahway Township formed from parts of Monmouth and Ocean Counties following the cession of those counties by Great Britain during the American Revolution,[5][6] Westervelt voted to become a township under Rahway's jurisdiction.[7][8] It would remain so until 1961 when it reverted back to its prior status as an unincorporated community within Middlesex County.[9][10] It has been said that because both townships had no elected officials other than headmen[11], each one developed slowly due largely to lack thereof compared with larger municipalities such as Princeton or Newark which had much more inhabitants at that time. This slow growth may have also been due to land issues: althoughWest Chester had acquired some land eastward along Route 202 since 1800,[12][13] most notably around Broadwalk Avenue (now called Park Boulevard), there was little available land eastof Valley Avenue including portions that would later be included in New Providence proper such as Roosevelt Road (now Donaldson Road).[14][15][16] Notwithstanding this challenge posed by limited potential development area - particularly given that neither township contained any mills - both communities gradually grew through word-of-mouth promotion among residents who knew each other well enough not only for trade but also social interactions outside restrictions set forth by municipal governments at that time forbidding close interaction between residents living near one another without special permission
