New Milford, NJ is a town in Middlesex County, NJ, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. New Milford is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metropolitan area and is home to Temple University and Ironbound Park. The first Europeans to explore this area were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew in 1524. The first permanent European settlers arrived around 1670 when Samuel Argall decided to move from Newark because of the religious trouble there. New Milford was originally called "Norwalk" after John Norwalk who had settled there two years earlier. In 1719, George Washington founded West Point Military Academy in nearby Morristown which became one of the United States' leading military academies. The town's name was changed to New Milford in 1836 due to its increasing population size and growing industrialization. In 1949, during World War II, the Japanese bombed New Milford killing over 60 people including 20 women and children under the age of 10; most of these victims were residents of nearby Rahway who lost their homes as a result of aerial bombing raids by Imperial Japan during that war. The attack came as a great shock to both America and Europe as it was one of few times during World War II where American air attacks directly impacted an urban area in North America. Since then, many large companies have moved into or been founded within New Milford – some famous examples include Intel (in Cherry Hill), PNC Financial Services (in Allendale), Comcast (in South Orange), GEICO (in Lawrenceville) and even Verizon Wireless (nowatelve). With all these businesses moving into town, along with new housing developments built specifically for them such as Ironbound Park, it has become one of the most vibrant places on Long Island - if not nationally!

New Milford is a town located in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now New Milford were Dutch colonists who landed on Long Island in 1624 and built a small farm there. In 1714, the British founded Princeton, NJ as a military post on land that became known as Princeton Township. In 1834, the township was divided into two parts; one established as the town of North Morristown and the other as the town of South Morris Township. By 1871, only North Morristown remained part of New Milford Township and became an independent city with its own government and mayor. In 1892, when Rutgers University opened its new campus in Camden County, it decided to move its undergraduate students from Newark to make way for construction work on the university's new main building. However, because North Morristown still belonged to New Milford Township and had not been annexed by Rutgers yet (it would be annexed in 1913), some students decided to stay put and form a community center called "Rutgers Village" near their old high school buildings. The name stuck and Rutgers Village has continued to grow ever since – reaching over 20 thousand residents by 2000. Today's economy is based largely on education with many businesses operating within educational institutions such as Rutgers University-Camden Campus (Rutgers Village) or Monmouth University (Monmouth Junction). Manufacturing also plays an important role in New Milford's economy with several companies manufacturing goods such as tires and clothing among others

The town grew rapidly during the 19th century and developed into a major center for agricultural production and trade. During World War II, New Milford was one of the most heavily bombed cities in Europe, with over 100% of its buildings destroyed.
