The name of the town originates from the old Dutch word "Nieuw-Markt", meaning new market or fairground. The first post office opened in 1812. In 1862, during the American Civil War, many residents enlisted as soldiers for Union forces and many homes were occupied by troops throughout the war; many houses still remain standing today as barracks for local militaries including New Milford's own military detachment known as Camp Randall Park Garrison Unit #2 which currently occupies two properties adjacent to each other on White Marsh Road just outside of town limits: Fort Dix Garrison National Cemetery & Cemetery (site now home of Arlington National Cemetery) and Camp Randall Park (site now home of Morris Heights Elementary School). After Reconstruction following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1865, white Southerners began moving into what had been black dominated sections of North Jersey while African Americans continued to be concentrated within Newark and southern Bergen County; this shift led to increased tension within newly formed towns such as New Milford between whites and blacks over access to housing, jobs, education etc., which culminated with violence at a small bridge located across Grotto Creek between Old Bridge Township and Easton Township on November 15th 1870 leading to three deaths when a group of white men attempted to cross without consent from one side of the creek to the other
