The New Milford Air Force Base was once home to the United States Military's Strategic Air Command, and it is now home to the 5th Bomb Wing. The wing has a history that dates back to World War II. In 1942, the wing was activated as the 4th Strategic Bomber Command and served in North Africa and Europe. It was during this time that they came up with the idea of using strategic bombing as a way of wiping out Nazi Germany. After years of development, these bombers finally became operational in 1945. The wing continued operations until 1997 when it was disbanded and its assets were reassigned to other bases around New Jersey.
New Milford, NJ is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name means "new town" in the Lenape language and refers to the fact that this area was first settled by Europeans in 1664. The first settler was Nicholas Hockley and his family. The area now known as New Milford became a township in 1784. In 1814, it became a borough when it merged with nearby South Amboy Township. On April 14, 1865, it became a city under the terms of an act of Congress admitted on June 3 that year. Under Mayor John Fenton (1981-1986), New Milford developed into one of the most successful small cities in America for several reasons: its low crime rate; its strong economic development; and its commitment to public education and social services. During Fenton's tenure, city limits were increased from 2 square miles (5 km²) to 6 square miles (15 km²). In 2002, Mayor Miroslav Ivanovic announced plans to make all of New Milford into a single municipality through annexation of portions of neighboring South Amboy Township – an idea that quickly met resistance from some residents who felt their community would be sacrificed if the move were made. After more than two years of public hearings and negotiations between Ivanovic and residents within both townships - including representatives from neighboring Sayreville - on July 15, 2002, both townships agreed to become one municipality under New Milford’s jurisdiction pending final approval by voters there. As part of this agreement Ivanovic also formed what is now called “the mayor’s task force” which will develop strategies for improving public transportation options or expanding retail stores within New Milford City Limits while ensuring continued access to social services for residents living outside the boundaries of city limits

New Milford was founded in 1769 as a small farming community on the Delaware River. From its earliest days, New Milford was an important commercial and transportation center for the region. In 1814, New Milford became the capital of the new United States of America. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1800s, thanks to its location at the crossroads of two major railroads and its status as a manufacturing center. By 1910, New Milford had become one of the most densely populated cities in America.During World War II, New Milford served as a key military base for munitions production in southern Jersey. After the war, however, economic hardship led to large-scale population exodus and decline in social activity and tourism. Today, much of what made New Milford such an important cultural and economic center has been lost or forgotten over time. Though some remnants of this history remain – such as a preserved train station – much of what once existed about this city is now largely unknown to residents and visitors alike.
New Milford was founded in 1764 by the surveyor, John Moore. The town was named after Sir Christopher Wren, who donated land for the town. The first settler in New Milford was Nicholas Pascall. In 1824, the community became a township and in 1832 it became a city.
