It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA-NJ metropolitan area and has a total area of 9 square miles (23 km2). New Brunswick was first settled by English colonists in 1676 as an agricultural community on the east side of the Delaware River. The original name for the town was "Northumberland." In 1764, Northumberland became part of Pennsylvania after its merger with Delaware. The townsite now located in southern New Jersey was surveyed in 1784 by Nicholas Morriston and named for Sir John Franklin, who had explored and mapped much of what is now Canada during the early eighteenth century. By 1802, it had become known as Trenton because Governor Edward Livingston had charted Trenton Bay on which to build a stockade to secure American independence from Great Britain

New Brunswick, New Jersey is a small town located in the northeastern United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census and has grown to 11,744 since the 2000 Census. The town is bordered by Princeton to the north, Atlantic City to the east, and Monmouth County to the south. The first people in what is now New Brunswick arrived from Rhode Island in 1664. The area was part of English East Jersey until 1714 when it became part of Pennsylvania as a result of the British North American Union. In 1802, New Brunswick became an incorporated city and remains one today. New Brunswick was originally settled by Dutch farmers who came overland from Holland during the seventeenth century. The first European settler in what is now New Brunswick was Pieter de la Garde who arrived in 1664 with his family and founded a farm called "Huguenot." De la Garde's descendants continued to live heretilafter. In 1714, following England's victory over France at Saratoga Army Park, Pennsylvania gained control of all of North America west of Quebec City effective September 1, 1714. As a result of this acquisition, English settlers began moving into what is now Delaware County and parts of Monmouth County as well (these areas did not become part of Pennsylvania until 1777). Dutch Immigrants also moved into central New Jersey beginning about 1800; these were more sporadic arrivals as most inhabitants had already left for Philadelphia or other northern settlements by that time. However, some Dutch families did remain until around 1830 due to religious reasons; they would immigrate back home once their visas expired or if their sponsoring family died abroad.(fn1) This trickle eventually turned into a flood as Congregationalists – Protestants who followed Jesus Christ – migrated from southwestern Holland throughout much of North America starting about 1700 AEDT(fn2). Like many others before them they encountered hostility from both Native Americans (the Susquehannocks) living nearby on land claimed by both nations and French colonists working along the Saint Lawrence River Valley (now Quebec), which led some immigrants to settle in new places while others chose not fight for independence from Great Britain.(fn3) By 1800 there were approximately 2200 Dutch immigrants living in central NJ including those living near Newark airport(fn4) . Although initially glance at this group may have seemed insignificant given their remote location few took any notice because transportation links between northeastPA¢ralNJ&southwestHonduraswere rudimentary at best.(fn5) Nevertheless this relatively small but influential minority helped shape early modern New Netherlanders through their actions and words
