Morristown is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morris County and the most populous municipality within the five-county New Jersey metropolitan area. Morristown is one of two towns in New Jersey that are both unincorporated communities, the other being Woodbridge Township. The first coffee beans were roasted on October 18, 1795 by Elias Howe and Sons from what is now known as Main Street in Morristown. The first coffeehouses in Morristown were opened by local merchants Fenton and Haddon in 1824. The city of Newark and its adjacent towns became caffeine addicts after they grew rich from manufacturing munitions during World War II, resulting in a large demand for new coffee sources outside of Newark. In order to keep up with Newark's demand for coffee beans and equipment, MORRISTOWN'S FIRST COFFEEHOUSE AND KAISER PRODUCERS COOPERATIVE was formed on December 15th, 1945 with the goal of providing quality coffees at an affordable price to all people who wished to purchase them. Morristown is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,351 at the 2010 census. Morristown is the second-largest municipality in Morris County and its economic base is based on manufacturing and service industries. The earliest known reference to Morristown comes from a document dated October 7, 1681, which states that “the Township ofMorris had been divided into five precincts by order of the Court”. This document also mentions that “Thomas More’s plantation called Evesham lay within these limits”. It should be noted that this document only refers to Morris Township; it does not mention any other municipalities in the township. The first permanent European settler in Morristown was John Nicholson who arrived in 1701 and built his estate on what is now North Main Street. He named it after his home town of Dunstable in England. Nicholson's heirs sold the property to Nicholas de Montresor who renamed it New York City on December 12, 1718 under an act of Parliament passed during King George II's reign. New York City's decision to name their new city after its native land led to tension between Britain and America over control of territory including what are now Morris Township and Newark, Delaware - two towns located immediately north of New York City proper along Long Island Sound (now Manhattan). The issue boiled over into open warfare when British troops burned down part of Philadelphia during the early days of American independence in 1776. On September 14, 1779, Congress passed an act givingmorris township form with four wards instead of three as proposed by Governor James Clinton – one for each community within range of Newtown Square – setting off a chain reaction that lead to the incorporation of more than 100 municipalities throughout New Jersey between 1780 and 1847 inclusive (and beyond), creating what would come to be known as "The Great Consolidation". In 1846, a group led by developer Elias Howe purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) west of where North Main Street intersects Easton Road from DeMontresor for $5 million – making Morristown one-third owned by Jews who were determined not to become embroiled in another interreligious conflict over land ownership within their religious denomination while living adjacent to large American Gentile populations (see Jewish colonization history). Howe continued developing this area into what are today Broadwalk Park and Park Avenue South before turning his attention towards developing adjoining areas eastward towards Princeton University and southward towards Newark Airport which he founded as Dewey Field Airport on November 15th, 1927 using money from his investment portfolio including mortgages acquired from various airlines catering primarily toward Yankee tourists flying into both Newark Liberty International Airport and Elizabeth NJ International Airport therebyocreating together what remains today one leading airport serving both cities with direct flights mainline transportation without having either city rely upon intracity transportation providers such as Amtrak or PATH trains running concurrently through chokepoints such as Penn Station). The name "Morristown" was given to the community by Reverend John Morrill in 1781 after he and his family arrived from England. The first settler in what is now Morristown was Jonathan Dunham who came to the area in 1793. In 1806, Colonel Augustus Kelly founded a gristmill at present day Elmira and soon began receiving goods from farmers throughout central New Jersey. By 1830,Kelly's mill had become one of the largest flour mills in America. In 1835, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail established a telegraph line through Morristown which made it possible for people throughout America to communicate with each other quickly and easily. The growth of Morris Township during this time led to the founding of several businesses including an insurance company (1856), a grocery store (1858), two breweries (1860-61), two machine shops (1862-63), as well as three churches (First Methodist Church 1866-68; Second Presbyterian Church 1870-71; First Baptist Church 1872). Businesses also grew along Route 9 which became known as Main Street due to its importance within the community during this time period. Many residents worked at local factories such as those run by Edison Brothers Manufacturing Company or American Tobacco Company until they left for better paying jobs during World War II.
