Morristown is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,752 at the 2010 Census. Morristown is located east of Newark and north of Trenton. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Morris County were the Dutch in 1609. They founded a small town on the north side of the Delaware River called Roelandstadt (Reed's Town). The English claimed it as part of their Plantation of East Jersey during the seventeenth century. For most of that time, Roelandstadt was part of Dutch Middelburg Province. In 1764, after France ceded North America to Great Britain, the English took control of Roelandstadt and renamed it Morristown after Major General James Morristown who had successfully led British forces against French forces at Saratoga Creek in 1762. The town grew rapidly and by 1834 had a population of over 25,000 people. In 1833, during Indian Removal policy under President Andrew Jackson, many Native Americans were forced from their homes around Morris Township including some who lived in what is now Morristown: 584 people from Muskegon Heights; 158 from Oneida; 116 from Wayne; 54 from Antrim township; and 8 from Whitehall Township which became part of Pennsauken Township when it was created through an act of Parliament in 1785. Most forcibly expelled were the Potawatomi Indians who had been living near Fort Pitt since 1763 south side along Third Street where they built their village known as "Kippenhusen". When hostilities ceased between American and British troops about 1800 some members of these tribes decided to stay put before moving west into present day Pennsylvania or Missouri but many others decided to move on because they could no longer support themselves with only hunting and Gathering food sources available for them scattered over an area that stretched 3½ miles wide by 2¼ miles long by 1/8th mile deep inside Indian country). Many families chose this option because there was little land available elsewhere so they never reached beyond Preble County where they would have faced discrimination if they did move on into other counties such as Somerset or Burlington even though those areas may have been more populous than what was available to them within Indian Country according to historian Edwin Sabinuski’s book "The History Of Settlers And Their Land". Morristown is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 14,959. The name derives from Morristown Fields, a rural area located within the township boundaries. The community was founded by English settlers in 1795 and incorporated as a borough on April 15, 1828. It merged with Paramus Township on February 1, 1950. The first Europeans to Visit the area were Dutch traders who landed in what is now Morris Township on December 13, 1614 during the winter of 1615-16. Dutchman Hendrick de Vries and his crew were exploration voyagers and not conquerors when they reached this part of New Jersey. A group of six men from Elizabethtown (now Elizabethton) Colony under Governor John Winthrop arrived at Morristown on October 2nd aboard the ship " plague ". They had been sent out by Massachusetts Bay Colony to explore land north of Newark Bay which lay abandoned due to flooding that year's hurricane seasonand which Governor Winthrop had mapped out for them as part of his Great Puritan Expedition. During their stay they builta small cabin near present day Westfield before withdrawing back upstream towards Elizabethtown under cover of night on November 7th following an attack by local Native Americans led by chief Weequahicough known also as “The Tiger†or “The Destroyer†because he had killed several Englishmen including one named Barnes while raiding their village nearby two years earlier in 1609-10 OnNovember 10th they set up camp again about three miles upstream from where they originally struck camp and continued to do so until January 3rd when they finally departed without having made any closer contact with any natives other than some brief encounters with friendly Delaware Indians who lived alongriverbanks east of Princeton Plains." "Governor John Winthrop's expedition visited this location in early 1615; however there is no evidence that any permanent European settlement took place here." In 1795 Morristown was established as a borough within Middlesex County after being proposed by George Washington during his tenure as president of the United States Congressmember for Trenton (now Paterson). At its founding it included parts of what are now Paramus Township and Elizabethton Borough but only came into full operation on April 15th 1828 when both townships merged into one body inhabitants numbering 5,811 residents making it one of the largest municipalities ever created in New Jersey." "Twelve years later – on February 1st 1850 – Morristown became one municipality with total population over fourteen thousand." Middlesex County considered annexing both Paramus Township (southwest section) andElizabethton Borough (northwest section) but decided against it because these townships formed separate wards within the county while still living inside their respective political borders - something that county commissioners found difficult to manage given that each ward typically consisted largelyof unincorporated areas surrounding major cities such as Newark or Camden."
