The Millville Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's Ninth Wing at its largest and most important installation. The wing's primary mission is to provide airlift, fighter and bomber aviation services for the Department of Defense. The wing also provides outreach programs to promote a healthy environment within Millville and throughout the New Jersey area. The history of the 9th Wing began with World War I when America was still a young country. On April 6, 1917, General John J. Pershing ordered American Expeditionary Forces into northern France as part of World War I. Because America had not yet entered World War II, General Pershing left his forces in France on May 10th and returned home on October 25th. With war raging all around them, the Americans needed an aircraft armament depot so they could carry out their combat missions without having to rely on British or German planes. So General Pershing ordered Major-General James Fenton to build Fort Monmouth Army Airfield in southeastern New Jersey as part of Project Paperclip which would bring over AmericanAAF pilots from Europe for training in America's new Boeing airplanes before returning them back to duty in Europe during hostilities. This new airfield would serve as training ground for American aviators until eventually it became operational as an actual military airport when Fort Monmouth Army Airfield was decommissioned in 1945 and replaced by Millville Municipal Airport which served the community well until it closed down in 1982 due to budget cuts within the United States government. In that year, Millville Municipal Airport reopened as United States Air Force Station Millsville after being purchased by the USAF from Township officials who leased it from the Township for thirty years starting on September 1st, 1982 through March 31st, 2009 inclusive (the date marked by a green tie). In 1949-1950 Colonel James Alderdice assumed command of Ninth Wing at millsville AFB following retirement of Colonel Homer Hynes who had been commandant at Wright Patterson AFB during WWII while also serving concurrently with Ninth Wing; this coincided with increased activity at millsville AFB due both to Cold War tensions between USAFE members Russia and China while also accommodating repairs/maintenance operations being conducted on numerous other USAF installations across continental US (elevated numbers included Maxwell AFB Alabama & Offutt AFB Kansas) concurrent with USAF modernization program called "Pentagon Modernization Plan" or "PMP". From 1949-1951 Colonel Alderdice oversaw facilities expansion that included addition of three runways: one parallel TOVN (turns into runway 11L/29R) became Runway 04(I), takeoff nonstop RY 05(C) became RW 09(E), RW 08(D) became RW 07R & RW 06L were realigned eastward along original taxiway (now EOF & 12Th Street NE). During same period Col Alderdice supervised construction/ rehabilitation projects on nearby Hackettstown AFB which include renovation/addition of hangars buildings taxiways perimeter road leading thereto NFL fields adjacent thereto extending 3rd Street westward from field boundaries thence northeasterly along 3rd Street to First Avenue NW then westerly along First Avenue NW finally southwesterly along 1st Avenue NW; these projects were accomplished concurrently with contemporary renovations underway at Newark Liberty International Airport although Hackettstown Field continued generally continuous use thruout latter years thereof - see photo accompanying this paper courtesy Mr./ Mrs.(Jeannie) Lappenheimer whose father Henry Lappenheimer owned (& operated) Hackettstown AFB prior thereto - see website http://www2a0fc0300e1fe9b8c3fdd7bf5fa3da/. The USAF also gifted the Boeing 747 airliner to Saudi Arabia in 1977, as part of a military assistance agreement. In 1992, the USAF gifted McDonnell Douglas C-5 Galaxy aircraft to the Royal Jordanian Air Force. The latest gift from the USAF is their newest acquisition: an Airbus A380 passenger jet. This plane was gifted to Qatar Airways in 2006 as part of a cooperation agreement between Qatar andthe United States. The A380 is a very large airplane that can accommodate up to 400 passengers and has become popular due its luxurious features such as its private area with three bedrooms and a spa tub, among other things.

Millville was once a thriving community that thrived in the early 1800s. The area was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century, and it prospered until the American Revolution. Millville was founded in 1795 by John Mill and his wife, Sarah. The first mill on the river was built by John Mill and operated until 1815. In 1827, the Mill family sold their interest in the mill to Nicholas Scudder. In 1881, the Scudder family sold their interest in the mill to George Washington White. In 1901, White donated the property to the township for use as a public school district. The township purchased the property from George Washington White in 1922. The present-day Millville School District was formed from part of Township 10 East on November 1, 1926. On July 4th, 1951, local resident Earl Weisman organized a fireworks display at West Field which is still held annually as a celebration of community spirit and friendship.
