In 1801, part of Hunterdon County became Middlesex Township; and in 1832, all of Hunterdon County became a township too. In 1838, portions of Sussex County were added to Middlesex Township; and in 1850 those portions were again divided into two townships--Hudson and Essex--and that township became yet another city: Newark (the first incorporated city in New Jersey). Newark's growth led to its incorporation as a borough on May 15th 1909. On November 5th 1932, Newark merged with Paterson to become one large metropolitan area with over 100 million people living within its boundaries at that time!
The first Europeans to arrive in Middlesex were the Dutch, who arrived in 1624. The next year, English settlers also arrived and founded a trading post on the site of present-day Hunterdon County. In 1681, the British crown granted land to three men – Gideon Lee, Nicholas Sudbury and Samuel Morris – for the purpose of founding a township. The Township was erected on April 14, 1765 and named after Peterborough Township (now Burlington County), New Jersey. In 1814, during the American Civil War, Union forces attacked Camden while General George McClellan was marching through Middlesex County. Camden's mayor surrendered his city hall to Union troops without resistance before being burned down by them. On July 4, 1814 – days after Camden's fall – Middlesex became one of five counties in New Jersey that seceded from the United States. Middlesex has had several mayors since its creation as a township: John Haines (1875-1879), Edwin Forbes (1901-1904), Abram Levy (1945-1948) and Harry Hughes (1974-1978).
