Middlesex is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2000 census. It was formed from portions of Newark Township on April 3, 1854. The name "Middlesex" comes from the old English word "middangeard", meaning place where wool was processed. The first European to sight what became Middlesex County was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he charted the area around Newark Bay and noted that the bay lay between Middlesex and Essex Counties. In 1764, while Lieutenant Colonel John Stevens of Pennsylvania's 1st Regiment of Foot commanded an expedition against the Indian Chief Massasoit's band near Perth Amboy, he discovered a water course leading down from Mount Holly into New Brunswick and named it for General George Washington. The road itself remains called Stevens Road today - though now known as Princeton Avenue - after Lieutenant Colonel John Stevens himself. On October 28, 1819, Middlesex made history by becoming one of the first towns in New Jersey to ratify the United States Constitution. A group of men led by De Witt Clinton came up with the idea to create a town hall because they realized that no one could represent them properly on their local boards of education or committees if they lived elsewhere and traveled back and forth to attend meetings thereon. They were inspired by reports that Philadelphia was being run amok without any government control or direction; so they declared themselves constitutents of a new nation under God with powers not granted to any other state or province thereof – something that would never be repeated in America until well into our 21st century!
