Metuchen, New Jersey was once a center for coffee production within the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The first coffee beans were grown in 1724 on the now defunct powder magazine plantation and it is thought that early Metuchen drinkers may have come from Holland to purchase these beans. Coffee production began in earnest in 1748 when two brothers, Nicholas and Cornelius Van Swieten, started a small farmhouse café known as 'The Starve-Maid'. The first espresso machine was created by Nicholas Van Swieten in 1754. One of the most famous Metuchen cafes was The Cafe Royal where President James K. Polk ate his breakfast during his visit to America in 1849. In 1892, Harry Doherty opened what is considered to be the first modern Italian restaurant in North America at 9th and Market Streets in Metuchen. This establishment became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town and remains today a well-known landmark. In recent years, Metuchen has seen an influx of new businesses eager to capitalize on its rich coffee history. Among these companies are Two Hands Coffee Company (formerly known as Café Amsterdam), which opened up shop near Main Street back in 2003; and Old Dutch Coffee Roasters LLC (OTC: ODTKF), which operates out of an old mill west of town on Union Street between Clinton Street and Washington Avenue. In 1951, the business moved to its current location and continued serving coffee until 1990. In 1995, the store closed due to a fire that destroyed much of the building.
Metuchen, New Jersey is a small town located in the Bergen county of New Jersey. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Essex metropolitan area. The first settlers in Metuchen were Wm. Haddon and Solomon Stonington in 1795. They founded a grist mill on the river river near what is now Middlebrook Township. In 1824, John Demarest bought land in present day Metuchen Township from George Washington Smith for $2,500. He laid out a street grid and named it after his patron saint, Mary (Mtuchumene). Demarest's mill was destroyed by fire in 1829 but he rebuilt it and continued to produce flour until 1852 when it became an flour milling company known as the Demarest Flour Mill Company. In 1865, Alfred Pemberton purchased the company and changed its name to Pemberton & Sons Limited which still manufactures flour today. The first permanent European settlers in Metuchen were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664 and named it "Willemstadt" after Prince Willem-Alexander of Orange. They built a mill on the Raritan River and began to grow grain. In 1709, they founded what is now Metuchen Township as part of West Milford Township; it was then known as Northumberland Parish. The township's name changed to Hunterdon County in 1824. By 1800, Metuchen had a courthouse and schoolhouse. In 1834, a group of German immigrants from Saybrook decided to settle in Metuchen Township and name their community "München". They soon ran into financial difficulties and sold their land back to the Dutch colonists for $4 per acre (raised by £1/acre). Despite this setback, the München Christmas party still remains one of history's most famous events. The event took place on December 6th 1834 at Christmastime dinner at what is now Holy Cross Catholic Church in Metuchen attended by some 12 families from Saybrook . Today there are few traces remaining of that once grand old house – but with plenty of memories associated with its festive occasions!
Metuchen was founded in 1795 by George Metuchene and his wife Sarah. The original home of the Metuchens was a log cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The family moved to a more permanent structure in 1811, when they built a sawmill on the river. In 1825, they built their first store and began trading with neighboring towns. In 1827, they organized themselves into a town corporation and became the first municipality in New Jersey. In 1865, Metuchen's post office was established and remains in use today. In 1896, it became part of Bergen County and later merged with Teaneck into that county. The Metuchens were instrumental in developing Bergen County as one of New Jersey's most important agricultural communities during the early 19th century. They also helped to develop industry in local surpluses such as leather production and boatbuilding; these developments led to increased wealth for those who lived near Metuchen's mills and stores.
