The National Guard of the United States of America was organized on November 14, 1792, in New York City. The first national guard units were raised in New Jersey on December 15th. At its peak, the Guard numbered over 27,000 men and women. In 1917, the Guard was disbanded by order of President Woodrow Wilson due to World War I. In 1920, the Guard was reactivated as a provisional organization for training soldiers for war service. On September 11th, 1924, the Guardsmen from Bergen County served alongside ground forces in Louisiana during Hurricane Warning season. The following year, San Francisco's Battery D was among those mobilized to help protect against an Earthquake in Los Angeles County. National guard troops have been deployed throughout our country since at least 1941 when they were activated to provide support for the military effort during World War II. During that time period they have provided manpower and resources to numerous local governments across our land as well as participate in various peacekeeping missions around the world including many deployments to Vietnam where they played a critical role in establishing effective relations with North Vietnam and providing security for Americans living there. On October 5th of this year (2007) marks 100 years since our nation's first national guard unit was activated here in Metuchen NJ! The New Jersey National Guard was activated on November 9, 1917. The units were first organized into the Motorcycle Brigade, and then the Infantry Brigade. On October 15, 1938, the brigade became an armored division. The division was reactivated on September 11th of that year as a national guard unit in Metuchen and has been there ever since. On July 24th of 1957, the brigade became an armored division again and has served continuously ever since. In 1995, the brigade became an infantry brigade which continues to serve today.
Metuchen is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 Census. Metuchen is one of the most ethnically diverse townships in New Jersey and has a significant Italian American community. It is also home to several institutions of higher learning including Rutgers University and Monmouth University. The first Europeans to visit what is now Metuchen were Dutch traders and surveyors on their exploration of the area in 1609-10. The name "Methuen" was given by Captain Anthony de Courtenay who sighted it from his ship "Adventure" while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on his way from Persia to Arabia in 1592-93. De Courtenay named two small islands around which Methuen would form: Easton's Island (now part of Demarest) and Weston's Island (now part of Union Township). On April 12, 1714, George Washington took possession of land comprising present day Metuchen Township from Sir John Johnson for £5 per acre (about $140 per square mile). In 1785, President George Washington granted him two tracts totaling . These parcels comprised about where much of today's Jewish Quarter sits - east side between residential blocks bounded by Ridgefield Road and Broadwalk Avenue/Demarest Boulevard. In 1807, when Morrisania became an independent township, Methuen voted to annex it into its borders without consulting with its residents or taking any public input; this action set off a series of lawsuits that lasted for many years until annexation finally happened in 1823 at a meeting called by Governor Nicholas Frelinghuysen after representatives from all seven municipalities had failed to attend one convened pursuant to Act No., 2 Geo., cxxxviii. The village site located just beyond what is now the eastern boundary line between Jewett Borough and Union Township was chosen as the new town center because it offered more space than either Morristown or Newark did at that time - large lots available for development made Methuen an attractive place to live for farmers and other landholders who could afford it despite its extremely high cost index due largely to its strategic location within easy reach both northward along Ridgefield Road towards Philadelphia via Keansburg Turnpike as well as westward along Queenstown Road towards Trenton Junction Railroad Station on the Raritan River Valley mainline before turning northwest onto Route 9W which connected Trenton with Princeton Junction Railroad Station southeast of Newark opposite Bound Brook Park Cemetery

It remained an unincorporated township until 1924 when it became part of Union County. Metuchen’s history can be traced back to its founding as a small German settlement on the banks of the Raritan River. There were only six residents at this time, but they quickly started a small businesses and built some homes. By 1830, Metuchen had become an important stop on the river for traders and travelers seeking passage to New York City or Philadelphia. Many of these settlers came from Germany because their governments did not offer them land or citizenship in America until after unification through Prussia with Austria in 1815. The townspeople quickly realized that they needed to get organized if they wanted to keep up with the larger towns along the river. They hired a lawyer and began building ordinances which regulated trade and social behavior within their community. These ordinances helpedMetuchen grow as a busy trading post with connections to both New York City and Philadelphia. During World War II, Metuchen played an important role in strategic decisions made by military commanders around Manhattan Beach as well as other points along Long Island Sound. Due to its location just downstream from mainland Manhattan, Metuchen was also used for military storage during this time period; this allowed local businesses such as shipyards located inland to continue operations uninterrupted while supplies arrived directly from Brooklyn or New York City waterfront locations like Staten Island or Queens). The postwar years saw many changes for Metuchen – it became an increasingly affluent town catering more towards commuters than shoppers looking for unique items unavailable elsewhere on Long Island Sound (although there are still several interesting vintage stores found throughout downtown). However, despite these setbacks, METUCHEN has managed to remain relatively unchanged since its heyday as one of southernNew Jersey’s most vibrant communities - full of culture, art galleries & antiquities dealers - over 150 years ago!
