Metuchen is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,904 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bergen County and the second-largest city in the state after Paramus. The name comes from a Native American word meaning "place where there are woods." The first Europeans to visit Metuchen were Dutch traders in 1624 who named it Nieuw Amsterdam because they had just discovered that this area lay between what are now Hackensack and Passaic Counties. In 1765, George Washington explored this region foraging for food near present-dayParamus and chose to stay in what is now Metuchen instead of continuing on to Princeton. In 1834, John Fenton founded an inn and store called Fenton's Store on Main Street which became known as the Fenton Hotel. In 1855–1856, local farmers organized a crop rotation project that yielded unusual vegetables such as turnips and carrots for sale at high prices at local markets. This led to increased traffic around the town center and spurred development of nearby Paramus and East Rutherford into larger towns by 1850s. Farming declined starting around World War II but has recovered somewhat since then due to advances in technology and better farming practices

In 1916, Metuchen became the county seat of Monroe County. Since then, the city has grown rapidly due to its location within commuting distance of Philadelphia and other major metropolitan areas. Metuchen's history begins with its founding by German immigrants who arrived in 1788. At that time, Metuchen was part of Westmoreland Township which was also adjacent to Easton township. Over time, development occurred within both Westmoreland Township and Easton Township which led to the growth of Metuchen into a small agricultural community with an economy based primarily on agriculture. By 1876, Metuchen had become home to over 150 residents and had started developing some commercial activities such as farm produce sales and local manufacturing products such as shoes and millinery items. By 1912, however, due to increased population growth throughout Monroe County (then comprising parts of Delaware and Montgomery Counties) Metuchen became the site of county government for all but two districts; these districts were combined into Monmouth County in 1916 following the creation of that state from portions of Delaware and Montgomery Counties).
