There are many coffee experts in Metuchen, NJ, and the city has a rich history of coffee consumption. The first beans were grown in Metuchen by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. As Metuchen grew and became an important center for industry, trade and culture, coffee became increasingly popular as a beverage. Today, Metuchen continues to produce world-renowned gourmet coffee products. The earliest mention of coffee being brewed in Metuchen is from 1812 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte states that he has "obtained some fine Javares [coffee] which I found at new Amsterdam." Coffee began to be sold legally as a drink in New Jersey by 1825. By 1860, there were more than 20 stores selling coffee throughout the state. In 1865, John Sargent opened his first store selling coffee and cake in what is now Briggs Avenue on the corner of North Main Street and State Road 21st Street. This store was one of the first to sell certified fair trade beans from Africa. In 1903, Mr. Sargent donated all his business assets to charity and founded the John Sargent Foundation which continues to support local farmers markets today

Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Hudson County, New York, United States. The population was 25,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Metuchen is one of the smallest communities in the metropolitan area and has a population density of just over 1,000 people per square mile (300/km²). The town was founded in 1796 by Loyalists from Ulster County who fled during the American Revolution. The first settler was James Hickey and his wife Catherine Beale Hickey. In 1827, John Vanderbilth opened a distillery in what is now downtown Metuchen. In 1869, Philadelphia-based philanthropist Lewis Cass donated land to build an school for black students on Second Street in Metuchen. The school became known as Cass High School and served African Americans until it closed in 1978. Metuchen was incorporated as a village on April 15, 1897 following passage of an act by the New York State Legislature creating towns within Hudson County. On December 5, 1907, it became a town after passage of an act by the New York State Legislature which allowed towns to be created withoutvillage status if they had a population of 10 or more inhabitants when they were established and if no other village within Hudson County had such a population at that time. The original store building at Third and Clinton Streets still stands today as one of only two buildings remaining from Methuen's early days as a Village

Metuchen was founded in 1714 as a small town on the Delaware River. The first settler, John Metuchen, moved from Newark, New Jersey and founded the village of Metuchen on November 6, 1714. In 1839, the village became a incorporated municipality and continues to exist as such today. The township of Metuchen was formed out of portions of the borough of Northville in 1868. The township was dissolved in 1915 and its lands were annexed by Burlington Township. Burlington Township continued to exist until it merged with Mercer County in 1961. The area that now makes up Metuchen has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years according to archaeological evidence discovered at various sites throughout the township. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Metuchen in 1714 when John Metuchen and his brother-in-law Peter Minuit landed on the Delaware River looking for land to purchase from Native Americans. They found some open land but also developed areas using their labor and capital invested in building boats and trading goods with local tribes including the Lenni Lenape Indians who lived along the riverbanks at that time. In 1839, following annexation by Burlington Township from Northville Borough, parts of which had also been annexed by Mercer County two years earlier,Metuchen became an incorporated municipality under statute No.: 8 of 1839 as follows: "This ordinance creates a municipal corporation consisting of one ward with a total population not exceeding fifty thousand persons." As such it functioned as an equal partner with Camden Townships (then part of Middlesex County) within Mercer County - both municipalities enjoyed legislative power but had no vote or authority over each other's budgets or operations beyond those within their respective wards/communities/wardenships. This model continued through 1860 when all municipalities within Mercer County were consolidated into one body known as "the county". However due to financial problems caused by high population growth rates (particularly during World War II),Metucheng amended its charter on July 1st 1916 to reflect this new situation; it regained its original status as an elected township where every individual could vote for trustees (who were then responsible for all aspects of municipal management). After World War II ended and controls over public finances returned to county hands however rapid postwar population growth led again to funds becoming inadequate so anew amendment was passed effective January 1st 1951 increasing trustee powers thereby creating what is still called "the old city" governance model today which results in numerous residents electing trustees directly without any centralized control whatsoever over our affairs outside our individual wards/communities/wardsmen! Despite these efforts numerous issues remain unresolved including ongoing budget shortfalls; most notably resulting from falling property values making limited funding available necessary for essential services while income levels have stayed relatively stable yet trust fund deficits continue unabated despite recent pledges made by NJ governor Chris Christie etcetera! It should be noted that many current community members were very active participants & champions OF METUCHEN COMMUNITY HISTORY THROUGHOUT THE LAST DECADE OR SO!
Metuchen is a borough in New Jersey. It was formed from parts of the towns of Metuchen and East Brunswick on July 1, 1873, as a result of the merger of those two municipalities. The name "Metuchen" comes from the Monmouth County word "metoc" meaning "mountain."
