Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,485 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Metuchen was first settled by European Americans in the late 17th century as part of what is now Essex County. In 1812, when Morris and Essex counties were combined to form Middlesex County, Metuchen was included within that county. The town's name comes from its location on the metropolis' east side near Newark and its role as one of the few points along Interstate 95 from which goods could be shipped into or out of Newark Airport. In 1834, Metuchen became a city under the terms of an act of Congress passed during Andrew Johnson's presidency. The city was incorporated on November 3, 1835 and named for George Washington Metzger (1784-1868), who had been mayor of Trenton since 1827 and had played an important role in developing Trenton as a commercial center after it became a state in 1834. At first only men could own property here; but by 1860 women were allowed to vote here too. The population reached 25,000 by 1920; but World War II caused a decline in population until it peaked at 27,813 in 1960. Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,788. The name "Metuchen" is from the Lenape word mehkon (מקום), meaning "place where meeting is held." Metuchen was first settled by settlers in 1740. The town was incorporated on March 14, 1814. The town began as a small settlement on the north bank of the Susquehanna River near its junction with Route 22 and soon developed into a thriving agricultural center with wide acreage and productive farms. Merchants and farmers grew crops such as corn, beans, peas, potatoes and hay; also tobacco and other products were produced. By 1870 Metuchen had become one of the most populous towns in Mercer County. In 1883 Metuchen became part of Uniontown Township when that township was formed from parts of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1915 Metuchen merged with neighboring Hackensack to form what is now known as Midtown Township which still has its own governing body today - the Midtown Township Council - but it falls within Union County government for all purposes including taxes and education funding purposes. During World War II much activity took place at nearby Middletown Naval Air Station which helped contribute to Metuchen's growth during that time period as well; production at NASM increased by over 50%. After World War II there were declines in both manufacturing jobs in Metuchen (the majority being replaced by service sector positions) as well as overall population growth rates throughout Mercer County; however this did not stop METUCHANians from maintaining their strong sense of community identity even while living outside their home municipality for periods ranging up to 25 years or more! Next came mill closures during 2001-2003 followed by an increase in unemployment beginning around 2007 attributable to global economic conditions that have since begun to improve; however current levels of unemployment are still above pre-recession levels! Priorities for both municipal budgeting/funding & investment continue to focus on attracting new businesses & jobs rather than returning those lost over time! Finally we must remember that despite these challenges some enterprising individuals always find ways to keep things going despite difficult times!
