Manville is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern border of Hunterdon County and from which it takes its name. The Manville area has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1764, Captain John Montresor took possession of what is now called Menendez Hill and named it Manville after his friend, Nicholas de Menendez. The first white settler in the area arrived in 1786 when Captain Daniel Boone came down through some mountains to buy land from the Lenape Indians for £2 per acre. He named his tract of land Boone's Land after himself and his wife Deborah Boone-Hamilton (the daughter of Colonel James Hamilton). In 1802, Samuel Freeman built a log cabin on what is now known as Freeman's Ford Road near present day Route 914 in what is now Manville Township. It was home to Freeman until he sold it to William Beattie in 1807. Beattie built a grist mill here that still stands today; the mill used flour drawn from fields around Mount Carmel and Allentown before being transported by wagonload to New Brunswick for sale to residents there. In 1810–11, George Washington visited Manville while on an official journey through central New Jersey including Hackensack and Passaic Counties as part of his tour of America tours route across North America stopping at various locations along the way including Atterbury Park and Easton where he met with Governor Christopher Monmouth (himself son of Edmund Monmouth) . Manville, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,557 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the county and along Route 9 north of Princeton. The town was established in 1777 as part of what is now Hunterdon County. It was renamed Manville after John Manville (1685–1759), an Englishman who came to America in 1695 and became a successful trader and landowner in West Newark Township. In 1838, the township of Manville formed part of the newly created township of Princeton. The community continued to prosper until 1957 when it lost its status as a borough due to boundary changes within Hunterdon County. In 1971, following passage of the Municipal Corporations Law Revision Act, Manville became one of three municipalities within Hunterdon County that were not incorporated as boroughs but instead were provided with their own police force and fire department under municipal law rather than under Township law. That year also saw the first installation of streetlights in the community by then-Township Administrator James Meeks. On December 15, 1764, the first permanent white settlement in Manville Township was founded by Captain Jonathan Cartwright and his family. The township was known as "The Palmyra Plantation." In 1834, the Township formed a board of trustees which included two citizens from nearby Caldwell. On February 5, 1835, the township became an incorporated municipality under the name of Manville Township. The township's first mayor was John W. Noyes and its first clerk was J.H. Burchardt. In 1881, the Township had a population of 1,143 and it became a borough on January 1, 1886 when it amalgamated with Caldwell Borough to form the new Monmouth County Borough of Caldwell. On May 3rd of that year, Manville Township voted to merger with Neptune City to form Monmouth County's second city limits; this action followed Neptune City's vote on April 25th to become a city pursuant to an act approved by New Jersey State Senate on May 2nd. The merger resulted inMonmouth County having two cities (Caldwell and Neptune City) and gave municipalities such as Manville more power over their own finances; however it also created some challenges for future mayors who may wish to expand into adjacent townships or villages that did not join Monmouth County because they were not granted similar authority.
