On November 17, 1922 it annexed parts of Plainfield Township to the south and east while Plainfield Township retained its own government. On October 1, 1951 Manville lost its right to hold an election for president of the United States due to then-administration official Richard Manges' certification that it did not meet all requirements for being a "city." However, on December 2 Manville City Council declared itself a city with full voting rights in any U.S.-based political elections thereafter - this done despite Mayor Murray's assertion that he still controlled city hall because Manville had never formally become a city. As of the 2010 census there were 9,521 people residing in Manville Borough who identified as being of Hispanic or Latino descent (of any race), representing 36% of all residents over 18 years old living in New Jersey who identify as such nationally. In addition there are large numbers (between 20-30%) who identify as black or African American; these proportions have remained relatively stable since 2000 when they increased by about 5%. The largest racial/ethnic groups are Italian (9%), white (7%), Portuguese (6%), Irish (4%) and Spanish (3%). Additionally nearly one third of residents report some form of religious affiliation other than Protestantism/ Catholicism/ Mormonism/ Islam according to Census Bureau data released recently covering Edison Borough which has an even higher percentage at 37%. As can be seen from this overview%, many different ancestries have histories dating back centuries within what could once be considered just two small towns located near each other – but their combined populations today make them something unto themselves!
Manville was first settled in 1727 by Nicholas Manville and his wife Sarah. They built a cabin on the banks of the Hackensack River. In 1808, Manville purchased 8 acres of land on the current site of Main Street and named it Main Street after himself. The town enjoyed a period of growth during the 19th century, with numerous businesses and residences being erected along what is now Main Street. In 1876, Manville became part of Union County when it was created from portions of Middlesex and Passaic Counties. During World War II, local businesses helped support the war effort by manufacturing munitions and other items. After the war, many residents moved to larger cities or left for economic reasons.
