Madison is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington metropolitan area. Madison has been home to the College of Physicians and Surgeons since 1853. The first settler in Madison was John Smith who arrived in 1752 and built a cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. The first post office established in Madison was called Princeton on February 14, 1754. In 1800, James Cranch purchased land at what is now Center Avenue and Broadway from Nicholas Township for $1,000 cash and erected a log cabin thereon which served as the town's first courthouse until 1802 when it burned down. In 1803, Burlington County was created from parts of Mercer and Middlesex counties and Madison became its seat. In 1825, it became one of two townships within Camden Township when that township was divided into two sections by the courts case "Burlington v Freeman". On December 13th of that year, Burlington Township officers voted to change their name to Madison after George Washington's birthplace (actually Mount Vernon). In 1861-1865, during the American Civil War, three battles were fought near Madison – Battle of Monmouth Junction (March 10), Battle of Hanover Heights (April 26) & Battle of Strawberry Plains (May 8). At these engagements Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his forces to break through Confederate lines at Cedar Creek outside Princeton where he discovered an important Confederate depot storing ammunition supplies being transported upriver from Richmond under cover of darkness. This exposed Confederate General Robert E Lee's most important command center without achieving any significant battlefield success; however Grant did achieve his objective of driving off Union troops before they could reinforceLee further south along I-95***********************************************
