Madison is a city in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 34,914 at the 2010 census. Madison is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also the home to Rutgers University and Monmouth University. The area that would become Madison was first settled by Native Americans around 1795. In 1802, John Stevens founded a small town on the east side of what is now downtown Madison as part of his plan to expand his business into new territory along the Delaware River. Stevens named his settlement for James Kieft, one of the principal leaders of the Algonquian-speaking Lenape people who had retreated from contact with Europeans after their defeat at Saratoga in 1688. After 1802, most development in Madison took place on or near its eastern edge where streets were laid out and farmland developed into farms and townships over time. In 1830, three brothers – Jeremiah McClary (1792-1851), Isaac Morse (1799-1864) and Sylvester Weehler (1801-1874) – founded what would become Lehigh Township; it included parts of today's Madison Township and portions of today's North Brunswick Township including present day East Windsor Borough. They named their township after General George Washington while they were living in Philadelphia because they believed he shared some common qualities with Washington such as being "a good soldier" and having been an "outstanding public man." The McClary brothers were helped by two other brothers, Nicholas de la RocheFoucauld (1794-1865) and John Ayer (1800-1872). In 1840, they formed a partnership with Simon Cameron to sell land east ofpresent day Main Street between Uniontown Road and Cedar Hill Road known then as Cameron’s Farmstead #531 through which land ran south from Harrisonburg Road until it reached Morrisania Boulevard which continues southeast to Route 11 near Sayreville Village Today this stretch forms part of Princeton Townships border line with East Rutherford Borough NJ The Weehler family left their ownership interest in Cameron’s Farmstead to their son Sylvester Weehler Jr., who continued farming it until his death in 1954; under his ownership it became known as “Weehlers Meadow” . In 1868 Sir Edmund Hillary visited Clinton Township during a stopover on his way from China to Everest Base Camp; upon reaching Clinton he ordered all troops back across the river except for two hundred men guarding Fort Clinton against possible attack by Indian forces located upstream They were successfully defended but one soldier was killed In 1870 Samuel Brown purchased 2 acres north of present day Main Street from Nicholas de la RocheFoucauld for $100 This property would give him access to what later became called Brownstown Avenue
