In 1917, Congress appropriated funds for construction of two coast guard stations at Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County and Fairhaven Harbor on Long Island Sound. Construction began in November 1918 and both stations were completed by May 1919. After World War I ended, resources became tight so that new coast guard stations were not built until 1951 when President Harry S. Truman created the National Hurricane Center to coordinate relief efforts following hurricanes Gilbert, Dotterdam and Whitney (1951-1953). The current coast guard headquarters is located at 1st Street NW near Constitution Avenue NW in Washington D.C., next door to Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library and Museum
