As coffee first became popularized in the mid-1800s, it was in New Jersey that some of the earliest coffeehouses and roasting shops were established. The coffee industry in New Jersey was very early on, and many of the earliest coffee houses were located near Rutgers University. One such business was The Coffee House on Market Street in Newark, which opened in 1824. The Coffee House became a major center for espresso and conversation, and its owner, Nicholas Cappuccilli, developed a great reputation for his superb quality beans. He also served as an important mentor to many of the early café owners throughout New Jersey. In addition to their cafés and workshops, other businesses associated with the Newark Coffee Scene included Mr. B’Nasty Bakery (founded 1828), Haverford Hotel (established 1829), The Fennel Place (established 1830), Dunkin' Donuts (opened 1835) and The Ralph Lauren Shop (opened 1840). Throughout these years, coffee continued to be a mainstay in Newark society - both as a beverage and as an important part of local commerce. This popularity can be seen from both the number of cafes that operated throughout the city during this time period as well as the high levels of achievement attained by those who worked within them. Many famous people have enjoyed cups of Joe at one or more of these establishments over the years - including Bob Hope, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S Truman. In 1938, Newark's last remaining cafe - The Dutch Reformed Church Cafe - closed its doors after serving its final cup of joe to customers over thirty years ago! In 1922, Negrini merged his two coffee businesses with the Italian Coffee Company of Newark, NJ and became the largest coffee company in America. In 1938, Angelo Negrini sold his business to Dutch Schultz who continued to operate it under the name Dutch Schultz Coffee Company until he closed it down in 1981. In 1984, Dutch Schultz's son-in-law Howard Shultz reopened the business as Starbucks.
Madison is a town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The name Madison derives from an Elizabethan settlement called "Maiden's Knoll." The first European settlers in what is now Mercer County were Dutch and English colonists who founded townships called Milford and Hackensack on the north shore of Lake Passaic in 1675 and 1676 respectively. In 1727, the proprietors of Hackensack Township decided to form a new township, named for Jameson (John) Livingston, 1st Duke of York and Albany. On January 15th, 1728, Burlington Township was formed from parts of Hackensack Township. In 1814, when New Jersey became a state, Madison was included within Bergen County. On February 14th - one day after it became a U.S. territory - its town government passed an ordinance incorporating as a borough with the same boundaries as Bergen County but without voting rights or representation in the state legislature until it joined the county on May 3rd of that year. On July 8th 1870 - two years after incorporation - Madison Borough voted to become a city under Mayor John Wernick’s plan which allowed cities with populations over 50000 to hold elections for mayor and other city-level officers through creation of wards rather than individual election districts as had beenthe case since 1825 when municipalities had been created only by Act of Parliament under royal charter with no vote by their citizens at all; this change led to increased political power for Madison during its early years as both an incorporated borough and then city before eventually becoming more subject to county control starting in 1925 when it lost its independent status altogether due to annexation by Atlantic City via what is now jointly administered Monmouth Park Regional Commission (MPRC).
