The community was first settled in 1764 by William Long and his family. In 1812, it became a part of Morris County and later Hunterdon County. The town was incorporated as a borough on March 1, 1898, from portions of Township 3 (now part of East Brunswick). On December 9, 1957, Long Branch merged with nearby Camden to form the new Camden-Long Branch metropolitan area. According to the 2000 US Census Bureau report "New Jersey Demographics", Long Branch has a median household income of $47,482 and a per capita income of $26,567. Males have a median household income of $41,886 versus $24,965 for females. The racial composition of Long Branch is skewed more towards white than black or Hispanic residents but there are also some sizable minority populations including people from Asian and Native American backgrounds

The first people to live in Long Branch were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around what is now the downtown area. In 1788, George Washington visited Long Branch and it became a stop on his inaugural trip as president of the United States. In 1871, Long Branch was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. In 1876, William H. Seward (1848-1924) became governor of New Jersey and he issued orders for military forces to be quartered in Long Branch so that they could provide security against internal hostilities in Illinois during the American Civil War. After World War II, Long Branch began to experience increasing commercial activity due to its location near highways 10 and 78 and its proximity to Middlesex County Airport. The population reached 4,000 by 1960 and 5,500 by 2000; however, growth has slowed since then due primarily to housing developments such as McKnight Landing which replaced open farmland with high-rise buildings along Route 78 between 2001 and 2006.
