Small batch coffee has been a popular beverage in the United States for many years. The first small batch coffeehouse was opened in Lodi, New Jersey in 1978 by Bob Kapp and his wife Peggy. Kapp's small business was the first to sell drip coffee and espresso drinks. He also sold specialty coffees such as roasts and flavored syrups. In 1984, Donny Deutsch opened the first large batch coffee house in Newark, NJ. Deutsch's operation served pre-packaged small batches of coffee from trucks that drove around town selling their beans on street corners and at local convenience stores. In 1990, Dick Costolo opened a small batch coffee shop called 'The Coffee House' in Paramus, New Jersey which became one of the leading regional spots for smallbatch coffee.costolo continued to operate 'The Coffee House' until 2003 when he sold it to Adam Goldstein who reopened it as 'The Star of Paramus'. From 2004 through 2009, Goldstein operated 'The Dutch Bros.' café located at 7 Broad Street in Paramus which was home to one of the most famous and well-known small batch cafes within New Jersey - The Dutch Bros.' Bakery & Cafe - where customers could purchase all types ofsmallbatch espresso drinks, roasts, pastas and desserts. In 2013, Goldstein closed 'The Dutch Bros.' café after several years of operations due to health issues; however he continues to sell his products online through his website - www.thestarofparamus.com Many other smaller businesses have sprung up over time throughout New Jersey devoted to serving smallbatch coffees including: Joe's Coffee (now known as Peet's), Dutch Bros., Bodega Bernardo’s Café (now known as SweetCoffee), Tootsie Roll Factory (now defunct), Four Barrel Coffee Company (formerly known as Black & Blue Roastery), Olde English Brewing Company ( formerly known as Hope Brewery) and more!
