The Little Ferry Naval Station was established in 1917 as a naval station on the New Jersey coast. The station's first vessel, the USS Constitution, arrived in 1917 and served as a training ship for officers of the First Naval District. In 1940, the commandant of Little Ferry became commander of all naval stations along the East Coast of America. During World War II, Little Ferry played an important role in the defense of New York City. The Naval Station provided storage and staging areas for Navy ships and aircraft during the war. After hostilities ended, Little Ferry saw little use until it was closed in 1972 by order of then-President Richard Nixon because its primary purpose had been supplanted by Newark Liberty International Airport. Since its closure, many small businesses have operated at Little Ferry Naval Station. These businesses include a grocery store, an auto dealership, a restaurant, a laundry facility, and a convenience store. Many people who lived or worked at Little Ferry have since passed away; most notably Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., who was born at Little Ferry in 1945 and became an astronaut withNASA before his death in 2008.

The USS Little Ferry was a United States Navy destroyer that served in the Vietnam War. On 15 December 1970, Little Ferry was deployed to the waters of South Vietnam to provide support for Operation Rolling Thunder. She arrived at the port of Haiphong on 5 January 1971. During her stay in South Vietnam, Little Ferry performed various tasks including providing cover for American forces operating in and around Saigon. In addition, she operated as part of the Task Force 58 which attempted to bomb North Vietnamese military installations in Da Nang City. Little Ferry returned home on 9 May 1971. After completing her return trip, she entered dry dock at Norfolk Naval Shipyard for repairs which lasted until 3 October 1971.
The Little Ferry is a small, rural town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,817 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mercer County. Ferryboat service from the town began in 1816 and continued until 1951 when it was discontinued because of low demand. The current ferry boat service begins on the northbound side of the river and ends on the southbound side opposite Ferry Landing. The town was originally called "Beacon Hill". In 1799, John Woolridge built a sawmill there which became one of the most important businesses in town. The mill closed in 1865 but Commerce Street still bears its name today as a tribute to Woolridge's descendant, George Fenton who ran an ice cream business on Market Street between 1861 and 1897. In 1836, Edwin Saltonstall purchased land east of present-day Little Ferry for $1,000 and began to build a gristmill which he named "Saltonstall Mill". By 1840, his mill had become one of the largest mills in New Jersey with its own water power and flour elevator. After Saltonstall's death in 1848, his widow sold his mill to James Aitken for $10 per acre ($2 million at inflation-adjusted values). Aitken renamed it "Aiken Mills" after himself; however this name too didn't last long because shortly before his death it was changed back to "Saltonstall Mill". The first post office opened in 1832 (the present day Post Office building is also located here). By 1850, many farmers had moved into Little Ferry because of good soil quality near by markets for raising milk and eggs; some even set up dairy farms there while others manufactured goods such as saddles or wagon parts at their factories elsewhere. During World War II much military hardware were made here including tanks and artillery pieces used during Normandy Invasion etc.; also tooling for various manufacturers like Singer Sewing Machines (later Jillee Machine & Tool) were produced here during that time frame as well as other heavy machinery used by industrialists throughout New Jersey during those years such as turbines from GE Aviation or locomotives from NJM&H Railroad . After World War II ended Little Ferry experienced rapid growth due to new industry development along highway 101 just east of town axis; primarily manufacturing like plastics processing plants serving metropolitan Philly area etc.; while retail areas expanded around downtown core becoming known popular shopping destination surrounded by high school/university campuses housing corporations/firms associated with those campuses etc.. However large scale apartment buildings were not built until later following Clean Air Act regulations requiring stricter earthquake retrofitting standards for new housing developments being erected outside populated urban areas during early 1960s...Today Demographic Outlook report prepared by NJ Economic Development Authority forecasts that majority (80%)of workforce employed within commuting area will be employed within 1 mile radius of station...This increase provides fertile ground for local restaurants & cafes that have developed over recent decades adjacent to university districts & commercial corridors providing employment opportunities nearby

On December 7th, 1942, Missouri became involved in an air battle with Japanese aircraft over Midway Island. The USS California had also joined this aerial campaign but was unable to participate due to her damaged engine room. In response to Missouri’s heroism, Captain James “Stumpy” Noonan awarded her posthumous rank of admiral when she died on March 20th 1944 at age 58 years old while attached tow Delta Squadron VMF(N)-521 off Iwo Jima following a mission over Tokyo Bay. This deployment is considered one of America’s most successful wartime campaigns as it resulted in the death or capture of numerous Japanese planes and vessels including three carriers: Juzuya Maru (CV-8), Hatsuharu Sato (CV-11), and Honshu Maru (CVG-4). Furthermore, Lieutenant Commander Raymond Aiken received the Medal Of Honor for his actions leading Delta Squadron during this engagement which occurred just days before Japan's surrender at capitulation on August 15th 1945. The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Francisco on February 4th 1945 en route to arrive at Pearl Harbor two days later after making multiple stops along the way including Eniwetok Atoll where they underwent operations outlined in Operation Crossroads which aimed to determine whether atomic bombs could be dropped on Hiroshima without causing significant damage or loss of life. On April 6th1945, Abraham Lincoln reached its destination; within minutes of landing at Kaneohe Bay they beganloading troops onto LST(L)-914 which would become their primary portof embarkation for passengers and cargo alike during their voyage around Hawaii Onboard LST(L)-914 were more than 1,000 soldiers from Company M2/7 Cavalry Regiment who would serve as guards for Admiral Chester Nimitz during his visit ashore In total there were more than 10 different ports through which LST(L)-914 passed en route from San Francisco harbor all throughout Hawaii As they transited between Hawaiian islands - often crossing dangerous waters - Abe Lincoln's crew provided anecdotal evidence that "the best time ever" for photos by local photographers had arrived Upon disembarking at Kauai - home base since 1927 – Naval Air Station Punchbowl had already been prepared for them The first stop on their journey was Honolulu International Airport where Emperor Hirohito boarded a plane bound for Los Angeles aboard Nakajima A6M Zero fighter aircraft led by Rear Admiral Toshihide Sugimoto After spending three weeks off shore conducting patrols near Oahu Island they returned safely back into Hawaiian waters on October 3rd 1945 only days after hostilities ended with Japan's unconditional surrender

In 1865, the township was named after Brigadier General William T. Hammond, who served as Major General of the New Jersey Militia during the American Civil War. The town of Little Ferry became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1868.
