Little Ferry was a small, unincorporated community in Morris County, New Jersey, and is now part of Union City. The community was established by the Little Ferry Railroad in 1857 as a stop on its line from Middletown to Perth Amboy. The railroad closed operations in 1959 and the community ceased to exist. Little Ferry was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who came overland from Ireland during the 1800s. The first European settler at Little Ferry was John Buchanan (1825-1900), who arrived with his family in 1857. By 1860, there were four families living at Little Ferry: Buchanan, McNamara, Hickey, and Weir. In 1863, the post office was renamed for Colonel James Fenton (1798-1868), an officer commanding U.S.-Canadian forces during the War of 1812 who served as military governor of Upper Canada before being appointed commander of the Morris County Militia in 1824. The earliest businesses in Little Ferry were a blacksmith shop and wagon maker's workshop operated by William McAlester (1801-1872). Between 1861 and 1865, three other shops opened: a store run by John Doherty (ca 1840-1910) which became known as "the Gilded Age Store", a bakery operated by Mrs. Sarah Rankin (died 1913) which became known as "the Bakelite Bakery", and an express laundry started by Mrs. Lillie Noyes (1800-1881) which became known as "the National Laundry". In 1865, two brothers founded what would become one of the most prominent business organizations in town: the United Irishmen Benevolent Association (UIBA). The group helped organized local labor unions and campaigned for Irish political rights throughout much of American history. In addition to providing social services such as groceries and clothing donations to low income residents through its famine relief program, UIBA also maintained several cultural institutions including an opera house built on land donated by Hugh O'Neill Dormer;a gymnasium/gymnastical center;and a library open to all underprivileged citizens regardless of race or religion
The first Little Ferry was built in 1794 by the Delaware and Raritan Canal Company. The ferry system began to be developed in 1807 when the New Jersey Legislature authorized an omnibus ferry service between Newark and Elizabethtown. The first Little Ferry was built on the now-closed Hackensack River crossing, which facilitated travel between Newark andElizabethtown. In 1832, the New Jersey Legislature authorized a new ferry company, the North Hudson Valley Railroad, to build a ferry across the river at Perth Amboy. This allowed people from Middlesex County to travel to Union County for goods and services. In 1839, a bridge over the Hackensack River was built at this site and became known as "Little Ferry Bridge". In 1848, another bridge was built over the Hackensack River at this same location; this became known as "Big Ferry Bridge". In 1913, a fourth bridge was added at this site – this became known as "Plymouth Pier Bridge". In 1922, part of Route 1 (now Interstate 95) was realigned through central New Jersey causing traffic backups on both bridges; however, no permanent solution had been found so traffic continued to cross via Big Ferry Bridge until 1967 when that structure also collapsed.
