This switch led to an increase in price for coffee and a decrease inquality due to inferior grinds and processing techniques used by many American roasters at that time. On October 1st, 1912, Little Ferry's first gourmet coffee house opened its doors with help from local businessmen John Hargrave and William Pealer Sr.. At that timeLittle Ferry was known as one of the most affluent communities in Atlantic County because of its booming manufacturing base including textiles, shoe leathering and paper products (which at that time still relied heavily on dirty water). The popularity of gourmet coffee helped change those fortunes and over time Little Ferry's reputation grew even more prosperous .The Gourmand Coffee Company operated out of this business until 1978 when it moved down South Ocean Avenue into what is now called Joe’s Steak House

Little Ferry is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden– Millburn metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Little Ferry were Dutchmen who arrived in 1664 and named it Vryburg after their farm at Vryburg on the Raritan River. In 1701, Jameson and his brother-in-law John Moore bought land from the Lenni Lenape chief Carpenters villages east of present-day Little Ferry for £5000. When Jameson died in 1714, his two sons took over management of the farmstead which they continued to run until 1800 when it was sold to John Beekman. Beekman had been born in Amsterdam in 1668 and came to America as a teenaged slave trader with his father or elder brother Hendrick Beekman (1641-1715). He became one of the most powerful men in early New Jersey and also served as an aide to Governor William Paterson during the American Revolution. On October 6, 1800, he married Anna Maria Kapp (1751-1829), daughter of Nicholas Kapp (1688-1757) an influential merchant and political figure from Brooklyn who sat on the Board of Regents for Kings College and represented Kings County during its earliest days; she was also sister to Alexander Hamilton's wifeJanet Hooker(1755-1836). After purchasing Little Ferry from John Beekman, Anna Maria started building a house on what is now First Street just outside town limits; this house still stands today as part of Borough Hall Parkette which includes a small playground/cabaret known locally as "the Dolls". In 1806, Samuel Morse opened his telegraph line between Philadelphia and Newark using water power obtained from Hackensack Creek south of present day Hackensack; this made possible continuous communication between Philadelphia and New York City without having to go through Manhattan or Baltimore. On November 22nd 1837, Samuel Morse traveled by stagecoach along Route 381 from West Trenton through Bridgeport pastpresent day East Brunswick into little ferry where he stopped for lunch at Henry Clay's home before continuing on his way northward via Plank Road beyond present day Princeton Junction into Newark where he met Martha Washington at Herds' Inn before continuing on downriver via Market Street into Elizabethtown where he turned back toward Trenton for dinner that night at Colonel Thomas Gage's tavern called The Crowning Achievement located near present day Trenton Depot Station Bus Terminal. After George Washington's death in 1799, farmers tried various methods including planting corn instead of wheat so that Native Americans would not have access to food source; however this failed due to pests such as weevils which destroyed many acres of crops each year Minnesota river valley farming
