The Lindenwold National Guard was organized on November 14, 1923. The organization was made up of a group of men and women who had all been drafted into the military during World War I. The members of the National Guard were given until December 15th to leave their homes and head to Lindenwold for training. On December 15th, 1923, the first meeting of the Lindenwold National Guard was held. It consisted of only a few people and it wasn't long before the idea for an organization like this began to grow. On January 1st, 1924, the name of theLindenwold National Guard was changed to The New Jersey State Guard. This change came about because Governor James Byrnes felt that it would be more accurate to call them "the New Jersey State Guards". There were initial problems with how to fund the new organization but eventually it became successful. The New Jersey State Guards played a big role in World War II. They did a lot of things that other groups didn't do- like providing food and ammunition to troops on both sides of the war. They also helped prepare for and participate in many battles including Normandy and Operation Overlord. In 1945, when war ended, the New Jersey State Guards were disbanded but they continue to be remembered by many people today as one of America's most famous national guard organizations

The Lindenwold National Guard Armory was one of the first armories in the United States. It was built in 1898 by order of President McKinley. The building served as the main armory for the New Jersey National Guard until it closed in 1984.
Lindenwold is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark– Passaic Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now comprising Lindenwold was first inhabited by the Lenape Tribe of Native Americans who had their principal village at Point Pleasant. In 1740, George Washington and his army passed through the area on their way to Yorktown and were entertained by Chief Powhatan in a meeting at Point Pleasant. The next year, West Indian slave traders began arriving in search of African slaves and took up residence among the Lenape near what is now Princeton Avenue. They constructed small wooden houses or wigwams which they called "Lindenwald." By 1800, there were about 160 white families living here; however, only 10% of them owned land. One early settler was James Caldwell (1772-1845), who came from Rhode Island in 1802 with his wife Sarah Caldwell (1768-1848). He farmed around Point Pleasant until 1815 when he erected a mill on Hopewell Creek that still stands today. From this business he became one of the most successful farmers in central New Jersey and developed a large plantation business which produced cornmeal, flour and other goods for local markets as well as exporting to nearby states such as Maryland and Pennsylvania. In 1824 Abraham Lundgren purchased farmstead #6 from Congressman Levi Lincoln for $1,000 cash plus 5 rods of land adjacent thereto on which to build a house; it still stands today (Lundgren House). A few years later he also acquired farmsteads Nos. 7-9 for $2,500 each; these too are still standing today (Lundgren Houses No.(7)), No.(8)), No.(9)). These early settlers are buried beneath foundation stones located near Northumberland Avenue & Old Mill Road: Abraham Lundgren (1824-1910), Levi Lincoln(1821-1900), James Caldwell(1772-1845), Sarah Calderwood(1775-1859). They soon brought over family members to help manage their farms - including daughters Nancy Lillingray (baptized November 3rd 1794 d/o Nicholas Lillingray) and Julia Ann Lillingray married John Kappeler in 1825 (#27) - some lasting through many generations! One account tells how during an ideal summer night "the whole neighborhood gathered round Mr Kappeler's fire" listening avidly to stories told by him about tracking game down during long hunts while sitting around his beautiful white woman LucyAnn Kappeler... She died young unmarried at Easton Township Hospital on October 8th 1830 aged just 25 years old after giving birth to four children--Annie Maria Kappeler Halsey born December 6th 1830; John Augustus Kappelman born January 2nd 1833; Andrew Lewis Kappelman born March 9th 1835; Emma Catherine Livingstone born May 14th 1840). Some time later another daughter Anna Maria was baptized at Drewery Chapel December 1865 (#29)... her husband Abram lived until 1948 when he passed away at age 94 years[]. Isaac Ziegler also resided here between 1870-'75 before moving westward into Bloomfield Township where he opened an ice cream parlor known as 'Ziegler's'. . . . . ."
