Lindenwold is a borough located in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,633 at the 2010 census. Lindenwold was incorporated as a borough on March 3rd, 1892. The name of the town may be derived from the two trees which were common in the area before development began. Lindenwald was also one of four towns that formed West Camden Township on February 14th, 1889 when Camden Township split off from Middlesex County. At first all of these towns used their own currencies and schools but eventually they unified into one municipality with equal voting rights and shared services. Lindenwald has a rich history dating back to European colonization days when many people came to this area looking for new land to settle. One such settler was John Wentworth who arrived in 1765 and built his home at what is now known as Wentworthville. A second early settler was Philip de Witt who settled in 1785 near what is now called Station Road and later became an owner of the original Rutgers University campus site which he donated to the university in 1834. In 1853 Jacob Schiff purchased 350 acres (160 hectares) of land just east of Lindenwold from Moses Weingarten which he used for farmland until his death in 1915. Weingarten had come over on his way from America's then-nascent country, Germany, where he had been a judge and business man before moving to North America.(1) One of Schiff's descendants, Irving Berlin Sr., founded Berliner & Company cigar factories along with other businesses including Nordstrom department store chain (1915-1920). In 1916 Jock Mahony bought 400 acres (190 hectares) north of town from Schiff's son Samuel for $5 million dollars resulting in Mahony Manor which still stands today overlooking Lindenwold Creek.(2) During World War II much activity took place withinLindenwald Borough due to its location at the center of numerous munitions plants operated by Bendix Corporation throughout New Jersey during that time period(3). Of particular note are Peek-A-Boo Drive near where Bendix manufactured artillery shells; Stillwell Drive near Bordentown Edison Railroad station; and K Street NW between Route 202nd Street/Old Bridge Road and Interstate 295/New Brunswick Turnpike both areas now part of neighboring Belleville Township.(4) Wendell Berryman became famous within Lindenwald after writing about it for Harper's Ferry Review magazine entitled "A Blueprint for Our Times". After publishing this article Berryman moved away but continued living there until his death in 1984.(5) Today Lindenwold remains an important community with strong ties to its residents and economy due primarily to its proximity to major metropolitan areas like Philadelphia, New York City or Delaware Valley cities like Trenton or Wilmington.(6) There are several notable landmarks located withinLindenwald Borough including: The Mount Pleasant Baptist Church - formerly Shenandoah Presbyterian Church; Beechwood Golf Club - whose courses include 9 holes each designed by Tom Fazio; The Harry S Truman Presidential Library - opened in 1987 adjacent to Beechwood Golf Club; Andover Learning Academy - a private school serving students grades 7 through 12 located off Route 202nd StreetNW.; Stroudsburg Area School District #8 operates public schools next door on Route 202nd StreetNW.;and Cedar Crest School District #9 operates private schools next door on Cedar Crest Avenue.(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12))

Lindenwold was founded in 1753 by the Dutch settlers and was named for the Linden trees that were common in the area. The town quickly became a center for farming and industry, and its fortunes waxed and waned over the years. In 1814, Lindenwold become part of New Jersey after it was given to the state by the United States of America. It continued to have a fluctuating economy until 1912 when it became an incorporated city. The town has experienced significant growth since then, with populations reaching over 20,000 today. Its economy is based primarily on agriculture and manufacturing, but it also has a growing population of residents who commute to larger cities. The community is home to several major businesses such as Hewlett-Packard and Northrop Grumman. Lindenwold also features a variety of cultural attractions, including an amphitheater and museum.
The first Europeans to arrive in Lindenwold were Dutch settlers in 1624. English colonists arrived in 1638 and developed the village into a small town. In 1812, the United States acquired Lindenwold as part of what is now East Jersey.
