In 1814, the Lindenwold Township Militia was organized and in 1816, the first village meeting was held. In 1817, the township was divided into two sections and in 1820, the second section was formed. The first name of the section is unknown but it likely derived from a large tree located near where present day Route 9 intersects with old York Road. By 1830, there were only four houses left in Lindenwold Township. Frame homes had replaced logs and by 1840, most families had moved to larger settlements around Princeton or Princeton Junction. The township's population grew steadily until about 1860 when it began to decline as new development took place along Jersey Shore roads. By 1880, Lindenwold had only ten households remaining and by 1900 it consisted of just six households. The last resident died in 1923.

Lindenwold is served by the Lindenwold School District. Lindenwold was founded in 1795 as a small frontier settlement on the banks of the Hackensack River by Captain John Smith and his family. The first white settler in what is now Lindenwold was Nicholas Pileggi, who arrived in 1798 from Palermo, Sicily. In 1814, Colonel Isaac Stevens erected a frame house known as "The Grove" on present-day Mount Pleasant Road to serve as a social center for local farmers and their families. In 1824, when Rutgers University opened its new campus in Newark and need arose for students to attend located near Trenton across the Hackensack River, Gov. George Hudson approved construction of a stockade around what is now Rutgers' undergraduate farmlands south of Sandy Hook Creek (now called State College Boulevard). The fortifications were completed in 1826 and became known as Fort Hamilton after General David Hunter's brigade that garrisoned it during the American Revolutionary War. The town boundaries grew considerably following incorporation within Middlesex County on July 1,1868; with an area increase of over . According to the 2000 Census there were 9,872 people living in Lindenwald Township including 496 households out of which 39% had children under the age of 18 living with them; 81% were married couples living together; 5% had one unmarried partner; 3% consisted exclusively of single adults without children residing with them; 2% were widows or widowers older than 50 years old; 1% reported being transgender individuals (defined above) It should be noted that since census updates are only available through 2014 this information may no longer include everyone who lived here then or may have moved since then

The name "Lindenwald" was derived from a word meaning "forest" or "park." In 1812, John Armstrong founded what is now Township 22 (now Lindenwold) in order to provide for the increasing German population in his township. In 1828, the Township formed School District No. 2 and voted to change its name to Lindenwald Township. On December 10th of that year, the Borough of Bound Brook annexed part of Township 22 including what is now Lindenwold Township into Bound Brook Borough effective January 1st of that year. The township has been through many changes over the years; it went through multiple consolidation with other townships during the 19th century before achieving its current form as it does today with 7,948 residents as of 2010 according to the Census Bureau
Lindenwold is a borough located in the New Jersey Department of Transportationvg-14 office area. Lindenwold was incorporated as a borough on May 11, 1876, from portions of what is now Union Township and Westwood Township. On December 3, 1916, the town of Lindenwold merged with the borough to form one unit. The original name for the borough was "Union Township" but when it became clear that this would not work to fit into the newborough boundaries it reverted back to its original name of "Lindenwald".
