Linden, New Jersey is a small town located in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,838 at the 2010 census. Linden is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Linden was made on May 12, 1781 by John Freeman and his brother-in-law Nathanael Greene as a result of the American Revolutionary War. On October 10, 1814, the town was surveyed and erected as a village by order of General James Wilkinson. It became an incorporated municipality on March 14, 1886. The borough of Linden annexed part of the village on December 13th of that year; the annexation provided for equal representation in both municipalities. On November 5th, 1868 it was announced that George Washington Cable had purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of town from Isaac Brock for $5 per acre ($200 total). This field would become known as "Cable's Field". In 1875 2 miles (3 km) north of town line there were also two other large tracts totaling 1/4 mile (.30 km) each sold to Nanticoke Township for $1 per acre ($25 total). These lots would become known as "New Netherland" and "Dutch Elm", respectively. Linden has experienced growth over time due to its location within easy commuting distance to major cities like Newark and Jersey City. Numerous businesses have been established in Linden since its incorporation including Exxon Mobil Corporation (now Rex Tillerson), Johnson & Johnson Electric Company (now J&J), Rahway cheese factory (now Rahway Farms), Ford Motor Company Plant No.#2 (Now UE Holden plant), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plant #2 (Now PPG Industries plant #2), Comcast Cable plant No.#3b(Now Time Warner Center)), Barnstable County government offices (#1-5) and more recently Google headquarters Campus (#7). Linden, New Jersey is a city in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,611 at the 2010 census. Linden is part of the Newark–UMD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Linden goes back to 1701 when a small hamlet on the north bank of the Raritan River was called Northampton. In 1872, after much effort by Mayor John A. Macon and others, Linden became an incorporated town under the name of East Brunswick Township. It was renamed to its present name in 1917 as a tribute to General George Washington Carver who had been born in nearby Salisbury Township and died in Camden County three years earlier. The first store inLinden opened on September 15, 1873, by Nathan Guggenheim and his brother-in-law Jacob Bakewell. At that time there were only two homes in town - one on Ridge Road and one on Main Street - and most people walked to their businesses or took buses from East Brunswick Township which was about south of town. In 1902, local farmer George Dusey constructed what is now known as Dusey Park near his home on Main Street for his horse farm employees to use during harvesting season; it remains today as one of the few remaining public parks in town with extensiveAndalusian style gardens dating back to that time.
