Linden, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Linden is one of the oldest towns in the United States and first settled by European colonists in 1719. The name "Linden" comes from Dutch settlers who named their land after a wooded hill in Holland. The community of Linden was founded on October 15, 1719 by Peter Minuit and his brother-in-law Cornelius Van der Velde as a farmstead on what is now Piscataway Township (now southern Hunterdon County) east of present-day junction of Route 22 and State Routes 9W and 99W. A post office was established at Linden on December 1, 1720, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1872. The first store opened at Linden in 1721 with Wm. Fenton as proprietor; it closed about two years later due to low sales. In 1725–27, John Tryon opened a tavern called Tryon's Inn on the corner of Old Mill Road and Market Street (later renamed James Street). Tryon also became one of the early trustees for what would become Rutgers University (then known as Princeton University). during this time period much coffee was grown near present day Elizabethtown Township along roads leading to Brunswick (then part of Middlesex County) where processing took place. In 1729–30 an act were passed to increase taxation within New Jersey for purposes including road construction but no mention is made of coffee beans or production here though some evidence exists that coffee beans may have been planted hereabouts during this time period if not earlier as deposits found near present day Alloway MuckRock Site date back to 1673 when Dutch farmers began storing cedar trees there which yielded valuable logs for building material such as barns/fences etc.. Coffee beans must have been processed hereabouts becauseAlloway MuckRock Site has evidence thereof dating back over 350 years! It should be noted that Alloway MuckRock Site covers an area that extends into Mercer county today making it difficult if not impossible to determine exactly when or how these particular processes took place however based off archaeological finds made at the site it appears likely they occurred between circa 1600 BCE and 1673 CE! Linden, New Jersey is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,869 at the 2010 census. Linden is part of the Newark-Union City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Linden was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Verrazzano". In 1764, John Sullivan built a mill on the Delaware River south of present-day Linden. In 1833, George Washington himself visited Linden and spent one night there before leaving for Mount Vernon. On July 4, 1849, Pershing's Expedition came into sight as they crossed the Delaware River near present-day Linden; this event is generally considered to be the start of the American Civil War. The mills and businesses around today's downtown were all established after that time or later during the 19th century when railroads moved into this area and began shipping goods throughout New England and up to Philadelphia and Baltimore. In 1907–08 Commodore James Wainwright temporarily served as Mayor of Newark while he took care of business with Spanish possessions in Cuba; he is most famous for his role in saving Havana from bombardment by American forces during World War II. Wainwright also helped establish Newark's port facilities which are now home to container ships docking at Liberty State Park on Broadway on Governors Island across from Star Ferry Terminal on Lower Manhattan just east of Madison Square Garden on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets (now Grand Central Terminal). In 1916–17 Mayor Nicholas Jastrow spearheaded an effort to rename Newark Bridge Road (later known as South Street) after General John Jasta who had been killed in action three years earlier while commanding British forces against German forces at Monschaux Ridge near Arras in Normandy – an event honored by Rutgers University until then its only military graduate campus rivaling Princeton University (the university has since graduated over 100% undergraduate students fromNJ shore towns)). Linden is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. Linden is located on the border of Middlesex and Essex Counties and straddles the Delaware River. It has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was part of Bergen Township. In 1834, Linden became its own municipality with a population of 514 people. In 1924, it annexed from Piscataway Township. The town's first settler was Johannes Tofts who immigrated from Denmark in 1785 and purchased land east of what is now downtown Linden for $20 per acre (approximately $). He built a farm named "Tofteskilte" which still stands today near present-day Third Street and Park Avenue. Tofts' son, Lars Christensen took over the farm in 1805 and continued to grow crops until his death in 1827. His grandson Christian Christensen ran the farm until 1865 when he sold it to John Snedeker who moved his family to Newton Township where they lived for many years before moving back to Linden in 1870. Early residents in Linden included Rasmus Nielsen (1793-1864), Jens Hansen (1800-1868), Peder Pedersen (1798-1866), Johan Christianson (died 1861) and Ole Hesselbæk (1792-1863). In 1834, Bergen Township split into two parts due to increasing population growth – one portion remained within Bergen Township while the other portion became known as Lindsey township due to its location on or near Newark Bayou between Camden and Philadelphia/Camden County lines. On March 8th of that year, former Lindsey township treasurer Elisha Stevens petitioned for incorporation into Middlesex County as "Linden." The request was granted on April 6th with a population of 514 residents including 114 men and 116 women under the presidency of Nicholas Canby junior including future Mayor James Kelly along with Trustees Isaac Weems Jr., George Wertheimer, Solomon Stroud and Elijah Whitehead among others; all were elected by popular vote without any property qualifications or election held outside open meetings common among chartered municipal governments at that time like those later established by Lakewood Borough Councilmembers such as David Bogue etc.. On December 3rd 1830, during what is believed to have been one of America's earliest elections using ballots printed on paper instead of drums or kettles like most elections would be until well intoeteenth century were conducted outdoors thanks largely to Major Elias Howe's donationation this event helped pave way for increased voting rights for women throughout much of North America especially given their lack thereof prior then.. The entire community surrounding Newark Bayou voted against annexation by Burlington & Camden Railroad becoming part of Burlington after only six months because they saw no practical useables potential there other thanas an industrial area with manufacturing jobs coming primarily from ships moored at Newark Bayou making little economic return on investment beyond Cloquet Head Light House which still operates today despite having ceased operations more than 20 years ago!
