It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Linden were Dutch traders in 1609. The name comes from a grove of trees near the village's center called "Linden". In 1737, John Woolridge founded what is now Linden Pond as an artificial pond for fishing and pleasure purposes. In 1814, General James K. Polk took possession of land east of present-day Linden Pond for military use; he named it West Point after himself and built a military fort thereon (west point still remains). In 1831, the New York and Erie Railroad reached Linden from Jersey City through Parsippany and made it possible for people to purchase fruits and vegetables from local farmers at nearby markets before shipment downriver to market in Philadelphia or New York City.
