It was formed from the merger of two towns: Linden Township and Willow Grove Township. Linden is located on the border of Middlesex and Union counties and occupies an area bounded by U.S. Route 1 to the north, Interstate 80 to the east, and Hackensack River to the south. The borough's ZIP code is 07642. The name "Linden" comes from Dutch settlers who named it "Vughtelandt". The first European settlers in what would become Linden were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. In 1714, they founded a village called Westhorne which became part of Perth Amboy after that city was destroyed by British forces during the North American War (1700-1713). In 1834, when Middlesex County was created, parts of Willow Grove Township were annexed into it while part of Linden Township remained unincorporated until 1868 when it became a Borough within Middlesex County. A post office called Willoughbyville was established in 1824 and remained in operation until 1914; it was renamed Linden after its incorporation into Middlesex County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of , all of it land.
