Lincoln Park is a large, public park in the borough of New Jersey, located in the Lincoln Heights section of Newark. At that time it was known as Douglass Township or Douglass Place because two brothers had owned it. The present-day name came about when John Charles Fricker bought land near where Pendleton Road meets Roosevelt Road in 1889 and changed it from "Douglas" to "Lincoln". The first post office at this location was called "Douglas" until 1892 when it became "Lincoln." When New Jersey became an independent state on November 8th, 1877, Douglas township became part of Newark based on population numbers only - not territory boundaries which were redrawn years later with help from surveyors working forNewark & Essex Railroad). The first house in what is now Lincoln Park was built by Major General Israel Putnam during the Paramus Campaign of 1776 at what is today Orange Avenue and Clinton Street (now Livingston Avenue). A second house soon followed at Bloomfield Avenue between Clinton Street and Jackson Boulevard (now Second Street). This early development can be seen evidence exists including cisterns found on property along Orange Avenue where Madison Elementary School now stands which may date back to this time period; however no evidence confirms this theory. After Independence Day celebrations ended on September 11th, 1781 rangers patrolled North Creek being led by Captain Benjamin Church with orders to protect newly founded settlements east of Passaic River (what are now Central Square Shopping Center Complexes) northward towards Bound Brook Landing due to fears British soldiers might attempt crossings undetected!
