The Kearny National Guard was organized on December 6, 1916. The first commander of the unit was Major General John J. Pershing. The Kearny National Guard has fought in World War I and World War II. In 1951, the New Jersey National Guard was merged into the United States Army Reserve as part of a program to increase military manpower in New Jersey. On September 14, 1957, the New Jersey Army Reserve Troops were mobilized for duty in South Korea after North Korea invaded that country. Since my mother was born in Kearny in 1947, she has always been interested in our national guard history and how it has played a role in our community! She especially enjoys reading about what gifts have been given to local units over the years and what people have done to keep our guards active and proud!

Kearny was founded in 1795 by Captain John Kearny and his wife Deborah as a small rural community on the north side of the Monmouth Peninsula. It became an incorporated township in 1834. The name derives from "Carrick" (a Gaelic word meaning "farmstead"). The township's surface area is . As of the 2010 Census it had a population of 25,693 people, making it one of the most populous towns in Union County. Its total land area is just over , making it one of the smallest towns in New Jersey. Kearny's economy has been tied to agriculture for most of its history. The town has produced corn, beans, cheese and other agricultural products since colonial times. In recent years however, Kearny has become more established as a bedroom community for Northern New Jersey residents and businesses located near Garden State Parkway and Interstate 95. Kearney is known for its Cornish pasties – pies made with boiled corncobs (known locally as "corn buns"), which are then deep-fried and shaped into balls or rounds that are then baked underground until they harden into a crusty topping; they are usually served with gravy or honeydew but can also be ordered without either condiment. As part of Edison National Laboratory expansions across much of northeastern North America during World War II many companies moved their factories to Kearny including Du Pont de Nemours & Co., Bethlehem Steel Company and General Electric Corporation among others Today there are few if any remaining industries within town limits aside from some light manufacturing such as plastics injection molding done by Tejas International Incorporated out on Route 46 between Midtown Center (formerly Kearney High School) eastward to I-295/Route 9W southward all the way to Pascack Valley Regional Medical Center - both formerly medical plants operated by GE alone before those facilities were merged into regional operations under Philips Healthcare when that company acquired GE Healthcare divisions worldwide including health maintenance organizations - this entire area now forms Philips Clinical Laboratories - all three buildings housing research laboratories along with associated support services used primarily for patient care such as pathology/microbiology testing; this whole area now constitutes Research Park - also home to NJ Transit's new $2 billion rail station serving Trenton Junction commuter rail lines heading towards Newark Liberty Airport and points beyond
