In 1861, Kearny was part of an unsuccessful attempt by Union forces to break through Confederate lines at Gettysburg. After the battle, many residents fled to nearby Philadelphia or Trenton in order to avoid fighting. By 1865, Kearny had largely fallen apart and its economy was struggling. However, it continued to serve as a military garrison until World War II ended it altogether.

The Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) also play their home games here with the exception of one season when they played their games in Camden, NJ due to renovations at Camden Yards. Kearny has two shopping malls - One mall opened in 1978 and consists of over 200 stores including Macy's, JCPenney, Sears, Kmart and Kohl's; while another mall opened in 2003 consisting of over 120 stores including Lowe's, Toys "R" Us, Gitmo military detainee camp clothing store & more. Both malls feature large amounts of outlet shopping as well as restaurants and cafes such as Dunkin' Donuts and Subway sandwich shops amongst others. There are also several smaller businesses scattered throughout town that offer small businesses owners opportunities to expand into larger markets outside of their original locations or close down altogether because competition from larger companies has made it difficult for them to keep up with changes inside their own business space.

Kearny is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. Kearny was named for Captain John Kearny, who fought in the American Revolution. The town is located on the border of Hunterdon and Morris counties. The first people to live in what is now Kearny were two families from Scotland who settled there in 1790. They hired a man named David Forbes to plat out a land grant on which they built their home and farmstead called Forbes’s Corners. In 1824, General James Kieft laid out the town on a square block of land he had purchased from Captain John Kearney for $100 per acre. The new town was named after General George Washington during the Revolutionary War as part of an effort by Kieft to show support for America's war efforts. In 1867, when Congress passed legislation creating Hunterdon County, Kearny became one of its many towns within it. The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as a community center/library. The first school in Kearny was built in 1876 and taught grades 1-6; however, it burned down in 1902. A new school was built and opened in 1903; however, it also burned down three years later. Today’s only remaining building from that era is the old post office building which still serves as headquarters for the local Chamber of Commerce
