Kearny, New Jersey is a small town located in Union County. It was founded in 1777 and became a city in 1852. The military has been present in Kearny since the Revolutionary War. The first military deployment in Kearny occurred during the War of 1812 when General Anthony Wayne arrived to help suppress the Native American uprising. In 1862, General George McClellan's army invaded New Jersey and Kearny was one of the towns skirmished along the way. In 1917, America’s entry into World War I caused an influx of soldiers and families from all over Northeast United States. Many soldiers stayed in Kearny and began their own businesses that continue today. One such business is PNC Financial Services which employs more than 1,000 people across five stores throughout Northern NJ and Delaware Valley PA. Today, there are numerous military installations throughout Kearny including Camp David (used for joint exercises with Canada), Pershing Square (home to US Marines Command & Staff College), McGuire Air Force Base (the home airfield for USAF fighter aircraft), West Point Military Academy (one of two colleges within West Point) as well as Fort Dix Naval Weapons Station (world-renowned for its cannons). This paper will focus on some of these installations specifically located in or near downtown Kearney – Camp David, Pershing Square, McGuire AFB and Fort Dix Naval Weapons Station – providing insights into how they have been used by both the military and civilians over time. Camp David was first established as a defensive position on Mount Desert Island during World War II to protect Manhattan Beach from Japanese submarines operating out of Long Island Sound. After the war ended, Camp David served primarily as a training ground for new officers until it was decommissioned in 1951 and became inactive again until 1981 when it again became operational as part of Army Reserve Command’s First Infantry Division headquarters at White Sands Arsenal east of Albuquerque NM until 1998 when it merged with Army Reserve Command’s Second Infantry Division Headquarters at Fort Bliss TX to become Eighth Infantry Brigade Combat Team/1st Infantry Division here at Camp David/White Sands Arsenal where it still remains active today under commandant Major General James Meeks III commanding brigade combat team 1st ID-8th IA

In 1765 developer Jameson Taverner built a dam across the Raritan River which made possible irrigation of the area and brought about increased development. By 1819 Kearney had a population of 1,500 and by 1828 it had grown to 3,000. In 1842 Kearny became part of Sussex County and by 1862 it had reached its current size with 11 stores and 100 residents. Steel production began in nearby Hopewell in 1903 and continued through World War II until production was halted due to wartime restrictions on materials used in munitions manufacturing. On November 14th 1912 Kearny's paper mill caught fire after being damaged by a lightning strike; this event helped spur industrial growth throughout Sussex County for years to come. In 1916 local resident Harry Weiler organized a bingo game that later evolved into what is now known as Atlantic Bingo Corporation;this game soon became one of NJ's most popular attractions for tourists as well as locals who could get involved in bidding on games from their homes or businesses (similar activities continue today at various locations around Union City). In 1951 local resident Edwin Weinreb donated land adjacent to his golf course for use as a state park; this donation has become one of the most significant cultural landmarks within Kearney Village today. Kearny is a borough in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Kearny was formed from part of the former town of Harrison in 1854. It is named for John Kearny, an early settler and captain in the Revolutionary War. The borough was founded on December 9, 1854 by order of Governor James Kieft as part of an effort to create new towns in response to increasing population growth around Harrisonburg and Princeton. On January 1, 1860, parts of what would become Kearny were annexed by nearby Montclair Township; this annexation resulted in a population increase for both municipalities that made it difficult to maintain close enough communication between them. In 1892, three-quarters of the residents of Kearny voted to merger with neighboring Montclair Township (which had already gained full city status), forming what is now known as "the tri-state area." This merger failed due to strong opposition from two portions of the community: those who felt their interests were not well served by the merged municipality and those who saw the move as an attempt by municipalities to take over more than they could handle administratively. In 1911, after years of negotiations and voting among its own members, Kearny annexes adjoining Westmont Borough into its limits; this action results in a population decrease for both municipalities but keeps them financially close together. After struggling through World War II without natural disaster relief funds available from New Jersey central government due to state restrictions on municipal spending (due to income tax problems), Kearny attained city status on December 2nd 1946 following a referendum vote which also granted citizens voting rights within their own municipality. During most periods since its incorporation into City Hall – until 1974 when it merged with neighboring East Brunswick – Kearny has been one of the most economically active areas within Hudson County thanks largely to its concentration of manufacturing businesses and its proximity to Interstate 94 and all major highways leading thereto. In recent decades however there have been several setbacks including declines in manufacturing jobs throughout New Jersey while other types economic activity has regained some footing; nevertheless overall Kearney remains one economically thriving community with many cultural activities taking place year-round outside city limits
