Kearny is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Kearny was founded by English colonists in 1738. The first settler in Kearny was George Washington who arrived there on July 4th, 1738 with his family from Portsmouth, England. Washington's father had been born and raised in Princeton Township in Trenton County and he also spoke English fluently. In 1739 Washington married Mary Tilghman and they started a home-based farm with four cows and fifteen pigs near what is now the intersection of Route 202 and Route 66. Two years later they bought a parcel of land east of the road for $10 per acre to build their first house which they named "Kearny". In 1740 Washington became township treasurer for Hunterdon County before moving to nearby Plainsboro to take up his new post. He would serve until his death on November 30th, 1802 at age 67 years old). Washington's successor as township treasurer was John Frye who held that position until1777 when he became justice of the peace for Hunterdon County instead In 1781 Frye married Susannah Potts (born October 15th, 177 1) from Allendale Township in Morris County and together they raised six children: Edward (1801-1885), Ann (1803-1875), Moses (1805-1873), Lydia Maria (born May 7th, 1807), George Washington Jr.(November 21st 1865 - January 3rd 1941) After Frye's death on May 10th, 1787 an election was held to fill his seat but no one claimed it so on June 8th an act was passed providing that any citizen who could produce affidavits swearing he had voted within twenty days should be givenElectoral District No 2 seat in Congress! This opened up many opportunities for young men like James Kieft who had recently graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in law enforcement under then Congressman Nicholas Scudder! Kieft soon proved himself as successful attorney by winning several high profile cases including victory over Robert Livingston during the ratification battle over the Constitutionality of Congressional Elections Commissioners! He would continue to practice law until his retirement at age 78 years old on December 31st 1975! After serving as an Associate Justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1930 until 1951 he moved permanently to Florida where he died at age 83 years old on March 26th 1982. Kearny is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. Kearny was founded in 1788 by Captain John Kearny and his men during the American Revolutionary War. The population of Kearny peaked at 1000 in 1828 but declined to 500 by 1880. It has since had a modest growth rate, with the population reaching 711 as of 2010. The local mines have been responsible for much of the recent growth in Kearny, although some businesses have also arisen from its long history as an agricultural community. Kearny's name comes from Dutch settlers who called it Karentyn (now Haverhill), which means "plain where the wild oats grow." In 1788, Captain John Kearney and his men were on their way to help capture British forces near Princeton when they came across a group of Native Americans known as the Mohicans. After speaking with them, Kearny decided that this area would be ideal for settlement and named the town after himself and his men - "Kearneystown". Over time, other pioneers arrived including Major Andrew Jarratt who founded Sayreville in 1824; Colonel Jameson purchased land here in 1830; and General George Washington's father-in-law Nicholas Easton established an estate here in 1835. The first stores opened in what is now downtown Kearney on State Street around 1827. By 1860, there were six general stores along Main Street serving about 1,000 customers each day. A post office was established at nearby Rahway on October 12th of that year and mail was carried into town every two hours until 1861 when First National Bank moved into new facilities across Route 9 north of town. In 1840, Captain Edward Everett Shively built a mill located just east of present-day downtown Kearney on Monmouth Creek while he was still stationed at Fort Lee Court House during the regular Siege ofBoston preceding America's victory over Britain at Bunker Hill. This mill became one of the most important commercial centers within sight or reach of any New Jerseyan soldier during the Revolution –shipping flour to Philadelphia and beyond through Clearwater River Valley —and served as an important link between rural areas throughout New Jersey down to modern days."Captain Edward Everett Shively: Pioneer Mill Builder" retrieved from mlive archives In 1850-1851 Dragoons barracks were erected northwest of town next door to Shively's mill used for storage by soldiers before being converted into housing units following America's entry into World War II.
