Kearny, New Jersey is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. Kearny is located on the Delaware River and Interstate 95. The first Europeans to visit Kearny were Dutch traders in 1609. A grant of land in what is now Kearny was given by George Washington to John Adams in 1775 as part of the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolutionary War. The name "Kearny" was derived from an Algonquian word meaning "place where men build huts." In 1837, General Israel Putnam built a sawmill on the river near present-day Kearny Heights. In 1851, Captain Augustus Prentice purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of present-day downtown Kearny from Samuel Fenton for $8,000. He developed it into an agricultural center with a sawmill, gristmill and farmhouse known as Prentice's Mills until 1908 when it became a munitions plant operated by Bethlehem Steel Company until its closure in 1976. In 1916 Colonel George Patton established his headquarters here during World War I before he moved to nearby Weehawken after being discharged from military service at Camp Butler outside Philadelphia. Patton ran his headquarters out of this building until he moved into his own home nearby in 1922 and then Headquarters Building No. 2 (now West Side Hall) which he occupied intermittently until 1944 when it became Headquarters Building No. 3 upon Patton's death there following an illness at HQSB No 2 which had been converted into an apartment complex housing senior members of General Eisenhower's staff during World War II whileHQSB No 1 served as Eisenhower's main command post during that war).
