The name "Keansburg" derives from two early Dutch settlers, Johannes Kean and Hendrick Kemeny, who arrived in 1684 and 1685 respectively. In 1729 Samuel Parsons bought land here from the Paterson family and began to build a gristmill. In 1854, Cornelius Vanderbilt established a sawmill on the Hackensack River near present-day Pennsauken Township and built a house here for his wife Lucy as their summer home. In 1865 he sold his interest in the mill to James Fenton for $10,000 cash. From this point forward Keansburg became an important center for cotton spinning and Manufacturing because of its proximity to mills owned by Vandyke & Sons (a company founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt) as well as other capitalists such as Andrew Mellon and George Soros who invested in it during this time period." The community experienced rapid growth during World War II with many manufacturing plants being set up hastily around town; one example being Wernham Hogg Paper Company which produced paper products such as cigarettes and chewing gum out of paper made from natural fibers like cotton twine that were then exported all over the world." Keansburg is a census town in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,501 at the 2010 census. It was incorporated as a village on May 15, 1868, from part of the township of Keansboro. The name comes from John Kean and his family, who were early settlers in the area. The first settler in what is now Keansburg was Nicholas Biddle in 1795. By 1802 there were six families living in the settlement including John and Abigail Kean and their four children: John Jr., George Washington (the son of John), Martha Ann (the daughter of Nicholas) and Samuel Richardson. A post office called Keansborough was established on February 24, 1807, by order of President James Kieft. The community became known as "Keansboro" after Colonel James Wistar; he donated land to the village for it to be founded with a storehouse and church built on it. In 1860, when section 8 of Township 12 north was taken off of Gloucester Township for annexation into Morris County, five farmers decided to move their businesses to this new county and form a village named "Keansburg" on May 15th1868-from partofthetownshipofKeansboro.TheFirstMayorofKeansburgwasJohnHancock.(nowa UPNJ resident).OnJanuary1st1975netzeropeople livedinkeansk RiverValleyandthevillagewasvoluntarilyabsorbedbyNewJersey Shore BoroughonMarch3rd1975.)
