Keansburg is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,865 at the 2010 census. Keansburg is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Keansburg were French traders and missionaries who came in 1714. They named it "Keehanstown" after Captain John Keehan of the British Royal Navy. In 1772, a group of Dutch settlers arrived from New Netherland and they changed the name to "Keanenburg". The first post office opened in 1774 and was called "Newark". At that time there were only five families living here. In 1812, General James Kippenberger (1784-1847), an American general during the Mexican-American War and later United States Senator from New York, decided to make his home here. He built a cabin on land he had bought near present day Main Street and River Road. His home remains standing as one of Keansburg's most notable landmarks today. Kippenberger played an important role in shaping both Keansburg's development as an agricultural community with its many farms and dairy operations dating back to its early years, as well as being instrumental in creating Morris Township (now part of Union City). In 1864, General George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry into battle against Apache warriors at Resaca de la Palma outside of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania – one of several engagements during America’s Civil War where cavalry played a significant role; Custer’s unit lost over 60% of its total force including almost all its officers but Custer himself escaped without injury or death despite sustaining numerous wounds which would ultimately kill him three years later at Little Bighorn battlefield in northern Wyoming while leading his own division.) According to the 2016 United States Census Bureau report,[2] 3,865 people lived within walking distance or less than 10 minutes' drive away from their work places or school districts when they moved into their current homes between 2000 and 2014.[3][4][5] As reported by NJ Advance Media staff writer Rebecca Kaplan:[6]: "[The paper industry]'s exodus has driven up prices for real estate around Newark,' said Will Woolridge III... 'There have been dramatic increases everywhere.' Prices are particularly high around Rutgers University ...[where Essex County has] more campuses than any other county.'" Accordingly,[7]: "The city's demographics reflect those close enough to work: Almost 60 percent are whitecollar professionals like doctors, lawyers or engineers; 30 percent are blue-collar workers such as truck drivers or construction workers; 5 percent are African American; 2 percent are Latino; 1 percent Asian Pacific Islander; 1 percent Native American; 0.5 percent Jewish; 0.3percent gay;" while "the percentage (%) black residents has decreased significantly over time (−33%)."[8]: As reported by NJ Advance Media staff writer Rebecca Kaplan:[9]: "(Keansburg) is not only smaller than neighboring municipalities but has seenYearbook photosynthesis rates decline statewide[/10]" yet according to Bloomberg Businessweek: "For decades,... Keansburg is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Keansburg post office was established on July 2, 1847. The town was founded by Jacob Kean and his family from nearby Rahway. The Keanes bought 640 acres (246 hectares) of land in 1798 and built their first home there that year. In 1820 they erected a gristmill on the east side of Route 9 south of present-day Keansburg Township boundaries. By 1830 they had also constructed a schoolhouse and two shops on Main Street west of the millrace which still stands today as an example of early 20th century architecture in the area. The township was organized on February 14, 1846, based on land grants given to some 50 families by Governor James Kapp as part of his "Kean's Plan" for divided township development within Middlesex County. Kindergarten classes were started in Keansburg in 1848 with ten students and soon reached twenty children per class; high school opened in 1850 with five students per class and soon graduated its first class including future Ulysses S Grant High School president Drury Ladd (1861-1941). On September 12, 1889, George Washington Bridge collapsed due to heavy rains that week and destroyed most of what remained of what had been called "the old village" or "Keansburgh." That night about fifty people living around the bridge survived by eating items that were provided them such as breads and cheese left over from previous days' baking operations when no other food could be found nearby; these survivors would later become known as "The Fiery Five". A plaque marking where the collapsed span once stood now hangs at one end of US 1 northbound between Camden Junction Boulevard (US 3) and Newark Avenue (US 80). In 1924, during World War II Japanese forces bombed Camp Stroud outside Trenton while troops were training there; this bombing caused severe damage to both buildings inside and outside camp which remain standing today although much deteriorated; subsequently Camp Stroud became known as The site des Luftwaffe Bombing Operations during World War II because so many planes were shot down here by Allied fighter pilots during those years' combat campaign against Nazi Germany throughout North America Theatre Headquarters HQ Air Force Command Post - MacDill AFB Tampa FL
Keansburg was founded in 1732 by Presbyterian settlers. It became a borough in 1854 and a city in 1912. In 1960, it was merged into the larger Philadelphia metropolitan area.
