In 2010, Newark was chosen to become the new capital of New Jersey after Trenton was removed from the state's maps due to financial problems. The first Europeans to visit what is now Jersey City were Portuguese traders in 1524–25 when they sailed upriver from Brazil laden with spices and ivory. The Portuguese built a fort at what is now Point Breeze (now Bayonne) before sailing back downriver towards Brazil again in 1527. A second Portuguese fort was built at what is now Newport (now Paterson), but it was destroyed by Native Americans in 1534. In 1614 Dutch colonists arrived at Cape May County from New Netherland via Staten Island, which then lay empty because there were no land grants available for purchase from the Crowns of England until 1664 when King Charles II granted land to each colony on Prince Edward's Island beginning with Jamestown Colony (later Virginia). On July 1, 1664, George Washington led an attack against English forces at Princeton while colonel John Wall served as his aide-de-camp; this battle marked the beginning of the American Revolution which ended British rule over North America proper six years later on December 12th, 1783. On October 3rd,[3] 4th[4] or 5th[5], 1764 George Washington landed his force at Perth Amboy on Long Island Sound next to where today’s Atlantic Avenue runs.[6][7] The landing occurred near present day Elizabethport (now part of Union Beach).[8][9][10] At that time there were only about 25 men under Washington’s command including militiamen from nearby Newark who formed artillery batteries along with soldiers from Rhode Island and Connecticut under Colonel Nicholas Myatt[11]. The site chosen for Fort Monmouth was just north of Perth Amboy across Meadow Creek from modern day Somerset Park.[12][13][14] Fort Monmouth functioned as a supply depot for General Benedict Arnold’s forces fighting against British Lieutenant General Henry Clintons' forces during the Northwest Rebellion in 1781; however its strategic location caused it not to see much combat despite being garrisoned by Regular Army troops only eight months out of service!
