Jersey City is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 902,611 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-most populous municipality in New Jersey and the sixth-most populous city in the United States. As of 2019, it had an estimated population of 1,815,746. Jersey City was founded on August 14, 1764 by Royal Yorktown Volunteers as a fortified military outpost on Upper Manhattan after British forces won the Battle of Yorktown over American forces in three days. In 1899, when New Jersey became a state and its capital moved from Trenton to Newark, then to Princeton, both cities grew rapidly despite different economic strategies and political relationships with each other. The first European settlement in what is now Jersey City was made by Dutch colonists who arrived via ship from Staten Island on July 29, 1614. They named their new village Plantersville after themselves – planters meaning “those who grow crops” or “the farmers” – though there were no farms located within present-day Jersey City limits at that time. The first known permanent English settler was Richard Stockton; he arrived on September 5, 1665 along with his family and built a cabin near what is now Northgate Avenue and Elizabeth Street). By 1668 Essex County had been organized, including what are now Hudson County and Bergen County; however control of these areas passed through various hands until November 25th of that year when royal order changed this situation and all land east of Hackensack River became part of Middlesex County (this included all present-day Union Township as well as portions of Caldwell and Nutley counties). On May 10th 1764 two companies from Yorktown under commandof Colonel Edward Jermyn laid siege to Fort George at Point Pleasant Beach but were repulsed with heavy losses for both sides; one day later Major John Graves led another Yorktown Company against the fort but this too resulted in a strong resistance by defenders which forced Jermyn to retreat back across river before ending any hope for victory. For his role in leading these attacks Governor Tryon awarded Jermyn an honorary commission as brigadier general which he accepted upon his return home to America on October 15th following his successful campaign against Canada (Jermyn would go on to serve throughout most of Lord Dunmore's governorship)). In 1807 James Hoban donated land comprising parts of what are today South Orange Avenue (northwest corner), Clifton Avenue (southwest corner), Park Heights Boulevard (east side), Willowbrook Drive (west side) & Demarest Road/Willowbrook Boulevard collectively forming Hoban's Garden portion of modern-day Paramus; this donation remains one of largest undeveloped properties in northcentral NJ remaining unoccupied for over 165 years! In 1860 John Drexel began construction on "Drexel Hill" adjacent to what is now West Side Highway where he erected numerous brick buildings including one still standing today totaling 151 feet high & 24 feet wide with its own internal loading dock! This development eventually gave rise to current nickname "DrexelTown". It wasn't until 1916 when Newark got their own municipal government that South Orange Avenue became part Of Newark - making it possible for Hoban's Garden property line to continue uninterrupted! Today much older versions of some streets names such as Clifton Ave., Park Heights Blvd., Willowbrook Dr., Demarest Rd./Willowbrook Bvd are still used by residents living within their original borders even if they live outside the boundaries shown below:
