In 1893, the Holland Coffee Company moved to York Avenue and became the first company to sell coffee from a truck. In 1898, Grosse Pointe Coffee opened its first location in Jersey City and is considered to be one of the earliest modern java joints in America. In 1916, Newark-based Harbin Coffee began selling coffee from a truck across Market Street from Newark Penn Station. In 1948, Regal Donuts opened its first store in Jersey City and continues to operate today as one of New Jersey's most iconic businesses. Jersey City is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 527,724 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th most populous city in New Jersey and the most populous municipality within the state of New Jersey. With a land area of just over square miles (1,600 km2), it has a population density of 369 people per square mile (157/km2). The history of Jersey City dates back to 1764 when English colonists arrived as part of British America and founded Newark on the Hackensack River. In 1847, violence erupted between Irish-American settlers and French Canadian immigrants after an altercation over religious services. This led to the founding of what is now called East Orange by John Knowleseffective September 10, 1847. On May 1, 1851, Newark merged with Bergen County to form a single county under Governor James Brophy. The new county had two towns – both named for British generals – Livingston and Ferry Hill. But municipal consolidation wasn't until 1870 when residents in Kearny Township voted not to join forces with neighboring Union Township to form another borough because they felt that their services were being neglected by Union Township's mayor and Board of Education members. A group of these same residents lobbied hard for incorporation as a city in 1871 but their cause fell on deaf ears due to resistance from Govt officials who saw it as taking away too much power from their counterparts in Union Township During its early years as a township village or company town, Jersey City experienced six mayors including: George Waring (1875-79), John Jervis (1879-81), Elijah Purdy (1881-83), Abram Shriver (1883-85), Moses Levy (185S-87) and Richard Stockton (887S-91). On July 1st 1898 Brooklyn Bridge collapsed killing 15 workers crossing below it during rush hour; this event eventually inspired Mayor Nicholas Murray’s plan for creating streetscape beautification projects which became one feature of “the great bridge project” begun by Murray in 1909–10 which would result in $25 million being expended on new bridges and roadways throughout New York City In 1916 local paper publisher Robert Haddon published "The Evening Journal" first known edition published November 14th 1616 AD printing press located at 161 Broad Street later renamed Broadus & Haddon Streets #1 took place; front page featured article about construction site behind building housing Ebenezer Baptist Church also built on site @ 175 Broad Street later renamed Park Row .
