In Jersey City, the Coast Guard has been providing services since 1839. The Coast Guard Station is located on Broad Street and it is one of the oldest military installations in New Jersey. The station was originally called Fort George but changed its name to the Coast Guard Station in 1845. In 1916, the Coast Guard Station was relocated from Fort George to what is now Jersey City’s Harbor Plaza. In 1921, the station began providing weather information through a radio system and in 1922, it became operable as a radar station. In 1951, the station became an icebreaker tender and in 1989, it became a unit of the National Security Agency’s Newark sector homeland security branch. Today, the station provides support for law enforcement operations as well as maritime patrol activities along New York State’s Long Island Sound and Atlantic Ocean coasts. However, following World War II Jersey City lost its status as a major U.S. port and has since been struggling to regain its former stature. Jersey City is a city in the U.S. state of New Jersey and the seat of Hudson County. The population was 24,643 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th-largest city in New Jersey and 4th-largest city in New York State. The metropolitan area has a population of over 50 million people, making it one of the largest in North America. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Jersey City on May 2, 1664 when Colonel George Washington's Continental Regiment passed through from Philadelphia on their way to Manhattan. In 1764, the British burned Newark without giving any warning to the inhabitants and deported most of its citizens including many Jews who had settled there two years before. Most of these refugees moved to Battle Creek Township (now Fair Lawn) in Middlesex County where they established a new community called Germantown which became an important center for Jewish culture after anti-Semitism began waning throughout Europe following World War II. In 1814, during Queen Victoria's visit to America, Jersey City was chosen as one of five sites for a national capital because it was thought that an American capital would be better suited than London due to its natural harbor and other advantages such as location near transportation hubs like Philadelphia and New York City; this idea failed to gain traction among Americans so Victoria chose Burlington instead. On July 29, 1847, with only 10 families living within its walls – all but four residents were farmers or their kids working odd jobs – Jersey City set off for what would become one of its greatest successes: becoming part of the newly created American Union under President James Kewanee on November 8 that year by ratifying a resolution calling for voting rights for all citizens regardless of race or gender; less than two weeks later on December 3 US Marines landed at Demerara Island just outside town limits bearing orders from Commodore John Rodgers not to fire upon any civilians until further notice; even then few shots were fired as every house appeared deserted save for some militiamen quartered there who disrupted proceedings by drinking beer and singing kerspliff tunes (in those days public drunkenness wasn't considered disorderly behavior). After independence was won but before new rules could be put into place governing citizenship and voting rights (due largely due to sectional tensions), local officials decided that Jersey City should serve as both Capital Territory HeadquarterssortoflikeNewYorkCityhadbeenbeforewhileBurlingtonshould becorrespondingtoWashingtonDcbecausethePresidentlivedthereandthe localswerewell awareofthedepartmentsthatwasgoingons).
