The Jersey City, New Jersey Army National Guard is one of the oldest and most veteran-owned and operated military units in the United States. The unit was formed on December 12, 1861 from part of the 1st Infantry Regiment of New York Volunteer Cavalry. It was redesignated as theNJAG on July 23, 1864. The NJAG served in both World Wars I and II including combat deployments to Europe and Asia. The unit has also participated in numerous commemorative events throughout its history including a parade in honor of President George Washington on November 8, 1886; a state visit by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Richard M. Nixon on October 10, 1974; a commemoration of 150 years since the founding of the United StatesArmy Reserve Command at Camp Douglass on October 9, 2005; and a service-day celebration honoring members who have died in action or during peacetime operations since September 11th, 2001. Today, the NJAG is one of America’s largest reserve armies with over 4400 soldiers stationed across New Jersey and Pennsylvania serving under multiple command staffs including Headquarters/Chiefof Staff (HQ/COS), Combat Arms Center - Fort Belvoir (CAC-Fort Belvoir), Artillery Brigade - Bergen County (ABG-Bergen County), Engineer Brigade - Union County (EGB-Union County) and signals brigade - Warren County (SBG-Warren County).

The city of Jersey City was founded on May 25, 1764 by the British colonists as part of the New York and Jersey Bay colony. The city became an important port for the importation of goods from southern New England, and its location at the mouth of the Hackensack River made it a strategic center for maritime trade. The city’s growth as a commercial center allowed for development of heavy industry and a rise in population to over 100,000 by 1800. In 1834, Jersey City annexed what were then parts of Elizabethtown and Edison Township. During the 19th century, Jersey City experienced rapid growth due to its importance as a transportation hub and its position within New York State as both the capital of New Jersey and its largest city. As a result, during this time period Jersey City also saw explosive growth in real estate values and become one of the most powerful political forces in New York City. In 1916, following passage of The Municipal Code which rigidified zoning regulations in Newark and other cities within New Jersey,jerseycity passed its own code which defined specific areas within downtown that were zoned for housing purposes only. This caused some controversy among residential developers who opposed this regulation because they believed that these areas would be used more extensively for retail than office orresidential uses. However, despite criticism from some developers,JerseyCity's Zoning Ordinance remains one of the most restrictive zoning laws in America today
