Hopatcong, New Jersey is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,696 at the 2010 census. Hopatcong is named after Captain John Hopkin, who was a British soldier during the American Revolution and later served as an officer in the State Militia of New Jersey. The first settlement in what is now Hopatcong Township was made on February 14, 1795 by Jacob Sherer and others from Elizabethtown Township. The township was organized on March 3, 1814. The township became part of Union County on November 15, 1911. On January 1, 1965, it merged with Haddon Township to form a new municipality of 2,715 people. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,611 people residing in the town: 730 households out of which 31% had children under the age of 18 living with them,[1] 50% were married couples living together,[2] and 28% were single individuals.[3] As of 2000 there were 718 housing units at an average densityof 99/sq km

Hopatcong was created on November 20, 1797 from the merger of two smaller towns: Bethlehem andHope Township. The first settler in Hopatcong was Nicholas White who arrived there in 1798. He built a cabin on the bank of the Hackensack River and named it Hope Valley after his daughter's hope for a better future. The township was organized on February 14, 1800 by order of Governor Thomas Cooper from land acquired from Bethlehem Township. On March 3rd of that year, John Stephenson founded Hillsborough Township adjoining Hopatcong to provide more space for settlers within the new township. The first courthouse in Hopatcong was erected in 1806 by Judge John McMorrow and installed by Joshua Hahn near what is now Old Bridge Road and Main Street. It served as the local court until 1821 when it moved to Highfield Court House which still stands today. -Hopatcong Landing (later known as Hope Landing) became an important stop on Hudson Bay passenger boats during its early days; passengers could disembark there to trade goods with Native Americans -Hopatcong also had a small retail market beginning in the late 19th century before this area evolved into its present-day commercial center In 1865, John Fenton erected a millrace across Hackensack River from where he distilled corn whiskey into brandy under license from Captain Samuel Morse & Company.. This millrace is now known as Fenton’s Mill Pond which can be found between Route 9W and 10W just outside of Hopatcong limits

Hopatcong was once a part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. When the British took over in 1664, they renamed it Hopatcong after their then leader, Sir George Hopetoun. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century and by 1790, there were over 1,000 people living in the town. The townsfolk built a number of buildings including a Methodist church and a school. In 1800, Hopatcong also became home to the first post office in New Jersey. By 1900, Hopatcong had reached its peak as an agricultural center with more than 200 businesses operating. However, during World War I, industry began to decline in Hopatcong and by 1945, only 10 businesses remained in the town. Since then, however, many new businesses have emerged within the town and today it is one of the fastest-growing communities in Bergen County.
