The United States Navy has a long and rich history in Hopatcong, New Jersey. The navy was founded in 1775 as the Continental Navy, and it played a critical role in the American Revolution. Hopatcong is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 6,041. The name "Hopatcong" is derived from the Hopewell word "happa", meaning “a little house” or “a cabin”. The town was founded on September 12, 1779 by Captain James Moore and his men who were looking for a place to establish a new trading post on the Monmouth River. They named their new settlement after General John Forbes's then-new regiment of foot called the 1st Battalion of Foot (now 2nd Battalion), Scots Guards. The first white person to live in Hopatcong was Nicholas Prentice who came from Allston, Massachusetts in 1780 and built a cabin on what is now the corner of Market and High Streets. Prentice's cabin still stands today and is known as "Prentice's Cabin". In 1801, Captain John Fenton bought land at what is now Pleasant Valley School District #201 from Nicholas Prentice for $5 per acre. In 1802 he erected a small log cabin known as Fenton's Hermitage which still stands today next to Fenton Street in Hopatcong. This was the first permanent settler in Hopatcong. Captain George Washington Smith also arrived in 1802 with his family and established himself along what is now Springwood Avenue in Hopatcong. He built a small log cabin known as Smith's House which still stands today next to Springwood Avenue near where Interstate 95 meets Route 22 near Freehold Township.(Smith later moved his family across the river to Easton.) In 1804, Doctor Benjamin Rush came to America with his family and settled down along what is now Route 422 south of Hopatcong.(Rush later became one of America's most eminent physicians.) Drs. Rush and Drs.' families started an inn at that location which remains open today as The Ben Rush Inn & Suites - located adjacent to Union College Preparatory School across I-95 from Hopkinsville). It wasn't until 1830 that Reverend Ezra Stroud settled down along Southfield Avenue just east of Main Street in Hopatcong.(Stroud eventually became one of America's most prominent ministers). Reverend Stroud started an academy there which still operates today - Moody Bible Institute - one of only two private academies left operating within United States borders (the other beingHarvard University). Reverend Stroud also founded The Hope Chapel Ebenezer Baptist Church located right next door to Moody Bible Institute - one of only two congregations operating within United States borders that isn't affiliated with any major denomination.). In 1830 Revd Ezra Stroud founded 'The Hope Chapel Ebenezer Baptist Church' located right next door to 'Moody Bible Institute'...one example where religious affiliation wasn't required for membership.' .
