There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the history of the Hopatcong National Guard can be traced back to 1866. At that time, New Jersey was still a slave state and there were no national guards. However, on October 15th of that year, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Morrill Act which created the first national guard in America. The act allowed for the purchase of land by states and for the training and organization of these guards under military discipline. The first unit to be raised in New Jersey was Company D of the 2nd New Jersey Regiment which was organized on November 1st, 1866. From then until 1889, all units within the National Guard were known as “New Jerseys” unitaries rather than separate units representing different counties or towns in New Jersey. Since its inception, however, there have been several changes to the structure and function of the National Guard in America. In 1969-1970, Congress passed legislation authorizing an individual battalion (or brigade) command structure for each state within our country. This change made it possible for each state to raise its own national guard unit with a commander responsible directly to Governor/Lieutenant Governor who also served as acting colonel general during wartime situations. Additionally, since 1991 any member or veteran of our military may become a volunteer member or reservist firefighter/EMT if he or she is unemployed or has lost their job due to military service (in addition any NHG veterans may join active duty NHG members). Finally, since 2002-2003 we have seen an increase in deployments across America as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom both conducted through NATO coalition forces compliments ofNHG volunteers

The present day town of Hopatcong was formed on January 1, 1907 when portions of two adjacent towns were merged to form a single municipality. At the time of its creation, it included all of what is now Monmouth County except for parts of Asbury Park and Brick Township. After World War II came an era of growth for Hopatcong as many refugees began moving into the area due to wartime shortages of food and housing. The town's population reached 10,000 by 1951 and 20,000 by 1960. In recent yearshopsats increasing importance as an educational center with several prestigious colleges and universities located within close proximity including Rutgers University Camden Campus; Seton Hall University; Hunterdon Community College; Monmouth University; Atlantic City State College/John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum; and West Chester State University have drawn students from all over the United States.

In 1854, the community became known as "the birthplace of American democracy." In World War II, Hopatcong played a significant role in the defense of America. As part of the Third Reich's effort to create a Greater Germany through propaganda efforts and infiltration into American society,Hopatcong served as headquarters for Nazi troops loyal to Germany. In 1945, after Japan's surrender and its forcible evacuation from North America, Hopatcong became one of the few U.S. towns to remain under occupation until Allied forces liberated it in September 1945. Following World War II, Hopatcong experienced rapid growth as various businesses moved in and new residents settled in. In 1970-71, the township underwent an extensive redevelopment program that saw the construction of several public works projects such as a high school (now known as Easton High School), block houses for police officers and firefighters (now known as Hope Fire Station No 1), and several convenience stores/cafes/bars/. Today Hopatcong is an industrial suburb with a strong focus on technology companies headquartered within its borders.
The town of Hopatcong, New Jersey was founded in 1714 by James Hopewell. The first settler in the area was Nicholas Fenton. In 1839, the township was renamed to Hopatcong Township after John Hopkins, a noted American physician and missionary who had settled in the area some years earlier. The township has remained unchanged since its inception.
