In the early 1800s, military gifts were a common and appreciated tradition in New Jersey. Military gifts can be traced back to the Revolutionary War. As part of the American Revolution, soldiers and civilians alike donated items such as clothing, tools, cannons, powder horns and other supplies. The Continental Congress ordered all citizens to send arms to their local militias in order to protect themselves from British forces. This period of time is also when Hopatcong began its military gift tradition. The town's first militiaman was Captain John Fletcher who served during the revolution. He gave away guns and ammunition to various civilian groups in Hopatcong as well as donating food for troops stationed in Fort Lee (now Uniontown). In 1796, Congressman Nicholas Sargent awarded Captain Fletcher a grant of 1000 acres of land in Hopatcong Township for his services during the revolution. Over time, more people joined Fletcher's donations including Colonel Nathaniel Nash who donated 4000 acres of land bordering on Sayrestown Township in 1814-1815. Daniel Webster also contributed money and munitions to local militias during the war with Great Britain. During World War I,Hopatcong became an important supply center for the United States Army due to its location at points along both sides of the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The town had a population growth rate above average throughout World War I due to its collaboration with federal agencies such as the Food Administration and Bureau of Refugees Relief. Additionally, Hopatcong was home to two US Air Force bases: Monmouth Base located on Main Street from 1918-1946 and Dover Air Force Base which was located at Airport Drive from 1951-1980]. Polk sent two detachments of troops to occupy Hopatcong after it was captured by British forces during the War for Independence. The town officially became a municipality on April 14, 1914. As of the 2013-2014 American Community Survey, the median household income in Hopatcong was $75,711 ±$10,907 (±$5,487), and 73% of residents lived below poverty line according to federal Poverty Guidelines. The first permanent settler in Hopatcong arrived in 1795 when Nicholas Lappen returned with his family from what is now New York City as part of an effort to establish new European settlements along the southern border of Pennsylvania. By 1800, there were about 20 families living in what is now Hopatcong Township and six villages near creek's mouth: Asbury Park (now Asbury Park), Beacon Hill (now Westwood), Broad Brook (now Broomeville), Cabin Creek (now Southwick), Cranberry Heights (now North Holland) and White Sands Beach (later Seaside Heights). A post office called "Hapatonk" was established in 1801 by order of Governor John McKim but no mail ever reached it because transportation was too difficult for goods to reach points beyond Monmouth County until 1809 when Colonel Samuel Dallaire built a ferry across Hackensack River atpresent known as Ferry Landing Place which served as both terminal point for stagecoach passengers coming into or leaving New Jersey and also acted as a landing place for immigrants disembarking at Weehawken Annexation Plan site opposite present Borough Hall building on Ferry Landing Road adjacent to private Cemetery where remains are still interred today. Hopatcong, New Jersey is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Hopatcong was Pieter Dirck Bremen in 1664. He named it "Hapatcong" after the Hauraki Gulf. George Washington passed through Hopatcong on his 1790 tour of America and stopped there on February 4th while marching from Morristown to Trenton. The borough was established as a township on April 1, 1871, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On July 1, 1916, the Township became a borough based on an act of the Borough Council which granted voting rights to all residents over 21 years old regardless of residency in any other municipality or county within Morris County. On November 3rd, 1951 – less than two months before Christmas – Hurricane Wilma struck the area and destroyed many homes and businesses including those of Mayor John Fenton and Borough Councilman Gail Sayers-Fenton; both were killed in their homes or business buildings when they were unable to flee quickly enough from damage caused by the storm. The damage done by Wilma also included extensive flooding that affected much of northeastern Morris County including Hopatcong; one estimate putsWilma's total direct damages at $2 million It was not until October 15th 1993 that reconstruction began following Hurricane Alfred which hit North Atlantic Ocean with winds up to 110 mph (175 km/h) - making it one of New Jersey's most severe natural disasters ever resulting in death and destruction across southeastern Morris County coastal areas including Hopatcong A fund has been set up for relief efforts created through donations received since then called "Hopatcong Restoration Fund" with initial goals being $10,000 per month
